About CHiPS

For nearly 50 years, CHiPS (Community Help in Park Slope) has been providing food and comfort to anyone who walks through its doors on Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn, on the border between Park Slope and Gowanus. CHiPS provides more than 100,000 meals a year to its homeless, poor, and elderly neighbors, and shelters seven mothers and their infants for up to one year at its on-site Frances Residence. CHiPS provides breakfast, lunch, and bags of groceries to those in need. Staff, volunteers (a dedicated corps of approximately 125), and social work interns help the young mothers access entitlements, find jobs, childcare and permanent employment, and learn the parenting and life skills they need to live independently.

Due to the Covid pandemic, in March 2020 CHiPS quickly transformed its operation into a Pop-Up food pantry five to six days per week, made possible by volunteers, local food donations, and partnerships with business and religious communities.

CHiPS has an annual expense budget of $990,000 and employs 12 staff. The majority of its revenues come from private foundations and individuals.

The Executive Director role

The next Executive Director of CHiPS will ensure that this community-based organization continues its unwavering commitment to addressing food and housing insecurity. The Executive Director, in partnership with a dedicated Board of Directors, will oversee strategy, program, operations, community/volunteer relations, fundraising, and financial management. This position will start immediately in the Brooklyn-based home of CHiPS, and will require the Executive Director to be based full-time, in person at the site immediately. Due to the nature of CHiPS support for its community members in need, remote work for this position is unavailable.

The primary role of the Executive Director will be to:

  • Manage a team of staff, and as needed clarify roles and delegate;
  • Report to the Board of Directors with program updates, financial and operational indicators, organizational opportunities, and strategic recommendations;
  • Maintain and cultivate relationships with CHiPS volunteers, partnering organizations, and funders;
  • Oversee the management of the financial planning, budgeting, and resource allocation for CHiPS, ensuring that appropriate internal financial controls are in place;
  • Craft and direct the implementation of CHiPS’ marketing, communications, and fundraising strategy in consultation with the Director of Development and the Board;
  • Act as the principal spokesperson to promote and advocate for the work of CHiPS;
  • Identify funding and grant-seeking opportunities, and in close partnership with a Board Committee, lead the fundraising for the organization;
  • Strengthen and codify the systems and tracking for client/guest intake, program flow, building operations, staffing and volunteers; and
  • Develop measures of success and tools to report on programmatic, operational, and financial effectiveness.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Committed to the cause of food and housing insecurity;
  • Prepared, able, and excited to help with the strategic, operational, and fundraising alignment of the organization;
  • Committed to racial, religious, socio-economic, and other diverse identities as well as able to demonstrate comfort and competence working with and leading a racially-diverse community and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within CHiPS;
  • Passionate, authentic, ethical, and mission-driven;
  • Experienced leading community-based efforts;
  • Well-versed in the challenges and opportunities of urban community-based small nonprofits;
  • Effective at public speaking and narrative presentations to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Able to successfully navigate relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including volunteers, staff, Board Members, public and private funders, and business and religious communities; and
  • Have a college degree or a comparable amount of professional experience.
