Position Description

The Associate Director of Partnerships, Advocacy, and Equity for Climate and Health (Associate Director) is responsible for supporting the Director of Climate and Health in the management of climate program initiatives, developing and implementing an overarching partner strategy for the U.S. climate program, as well as federal advocacy strategies that leverage the influence of the health care sector and health professionals. The Associate Director will work closely with other staff across Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) and Practice Greenhealth (PGH) to identify and coordinate partnership and federal advocacy opportunities and to embed health equity and environmental justice into the work.  
 

Primary Objectives

• As a core member of the Climate and Health team, develop, manage and support climate and health initiatives by engaging with health systems, clinicians, and strategic partner organizations to promote institutional, governmental, and community climate solutions.
• Lead the continued development, management, and coordination of a partnership strategy for the HCWH U.S./Practice Greenhealth climate program to strengthen the climate program’s goals, build coalitions, and grow the organization’s influence and reach.
• Working closely with the Associate Director of State Policy Programs, lead the development and implementation of a federal policy advocacy strategy that promotes legislative and regulatory climate solutions to support the transition to a climate-smart, climate-ready health care system.
• Embed health equity and environmental justice into our programmatic strategy and broader organization’s operations and culture.
• Write and contribute to grant proposals and reporting.

Essential Functions

• Collaborate with the climate team and other HCWH/ Practice Greenhealth staff on the planning and implementation of climate and health related projects and campaigns.
• Working closely with the climate and health team, develop and implement partner strategies and projects that support the advancement of the program’s three-pillar climate-smart framework of mitigation, resilience and leadership, with a focus on vulnerable populations and community resilience.
• Represent HCWH at meetings with other partner organizations including advisory and steering committee roles. (Note: This function is not exclusive to this role. All members of the team are engaged with partner organizations).
• Participate in calls with potential partners to assess alignment and organizational opportunities.
• Develop and implement a targeted federal policy advocacy strategy that includes both legislative and regulatory approaches to advance the transition to climate-smart health care and the communities they serve.
• With support of partner advocacy organizations, follow major federal policy developments related to climate and health, with a focus on impacts on health care and vulnerable populations, interpret them for staff, and make recommendations for advocacy engagement.
• Plan and facilitate Health Care Climate Council meetings and other meetings and educational events in collaboration with the climate team.
• Work closely with the climate team to plan, develop, and facilitate virtual and in-person climate educational sessions including those for our CleanMed conference.
• Collaborate with climate team to build a network of health professionals equipped to advocate for climate-smart policies that protect public health and build environmental and health equity.
• In collaboration with the Associate Director of State Policy Programs and the Boston Director of Climate Policy, build the climate advocacy capacity of health system sustainability and government affairs staff through trainings and information and resource sharing.
• Coordinate the climate program’s equity and justice strategies with the organizational Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee.
• All other duties as requested and needed to meet organizational goals.

Qualifications

• Minimum Education: BA or BS. Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education
• Minimum Experience: 5 years
• Required Field of Expertise: Public policy and stakeholder management in health care or environmental advocacy. Previous work building organizational partnerships and fostering health equity or environmental justice into strategies.
• Preferred Education: BA or BS in health field, political science, environmental studies/science, or communications, Master’s degree preferred.
• Preferred Experience:
• Eight years of advocacy work in a health or environmental advocacy organization OR health care or environmental legislative and/or regulatory experience.
• Experience working in a virtual organization
• Experience with grant writing and reporting

JOB-SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

• Knowledge of energy and climate change issues, and ideally about the impacts on health and the health care sector.
• Experience working with coalitions or partnerships of diverse stakeholders with common interests.
• Ability to identify and build strong, strategic partnerships with aligned organizations.
• Strong program and project management experience. Experience hiring and managing external consultants preferred.
• Record of successful policy advocacy experience including ability to track policy developments, analyze and summarize key points of bills and regulations, and train non-policy professionals to effectively advocate for health or environmental issues.
• Expertise and experience integrating health equity and environmental justice into programs, policy and advocacy strategies.
• Well-honed interpersonal and communication skills to work across a virtual organization and with varied external stakeholders, including policymakers and regulators, health care professionals, and media.
• Ability to organize and manage multiple projects concurrently and to thrive in a fast-paced environment
• Strong meeting facilitation, planning, and presentation skills.
• Excellent written communication skills and facility to adapt writing style for different purposes and different audiences (e.g. official comments on policy, op-eds, letter of support).
• Experience with grant development, tracking and reporting preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver specific projects and initiatives independently and as part of a team.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and Google Suite.
