The Salvation Army is seeking an experienced Director of Major Gifts (Divisional Resource Development Director) in the Potomac Division to lead, manage, cultivate, solicit and steward the major gifts program.

We are committed to meeting human needs wherever we can by providing food distribution, disaster relief, rehabilitation centers, anti-human trafficking efforts, housing for homeless, children’s programs and many other programs.

This Divisional Resource Development Director will lead, train and mentor a team of professionals to raise funds to enable the mission of The Salvation Army in the DC, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia area. The candidate will develop and nurture current and prospective donors including individuals, foundations and corporations in an assigned geographic region of the Division; respond to inquiries and communicate with donors, advisory organization members, Salvation Army employees and leaders. The position has direct oversight for a team of 8 professionals across DC, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia and will be responsible for training, mentoring and accountability of its members.   There is required day and overnight travel within the three-state region and will be based in the DC metro area.   Must live in or be willing to relocate to the travel area required for the position.

We are looking for candidates with a proven track record of success and the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, AND five years’ experience performing progressively responsible fundraising work in a charitable organization with demonstrated successful major donor fund raising experience preferred
  • Experience in leading a team of fund-raising professionals
  • Knowledge of Major Gifts and Planned Giving
  • Develops and executes a Donor Portfolio of donors and prospective donors for raising funds in an assigned geographic region of the Division.  The Portfolio will include building and growing relationships with individuals, foundations and corporations that will results in monies raised for the ministry of The Salvation Army.
  • Proven history of establishing and maintaining strong long-term donor relationships
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Track record of achieving goals
  • Prior experience with a donor management system
