Heluna Health invites applications for the full-time position of a Community-Based Youth (CBY) Research Associate to perform duties to fulfill the primary objectives of the San Francisco STD Surveillance Network (SSuN) project. The CBY Research Associate will be supervised by the Community Health Equity and Promotion (CHEP) Branch Sexual Health Program Coordinator and work in collaboration with the lead SSuN epidemiologist. 

The primary duties of the CBY Research Associate include conducting phone interviews with a sample of SF residents recently diagnosed with gonorrhea and contact the providers who diagnosed them to collect enhanced behavioral, demographic, and clinical information; and administering surveys to patients at the municipal STD clinic.

The CBY Research Associate will be responsible for managing assigned cases, entering data from completed interviews, ensuring collection of clinic waiting room surveys and data upload, and contacting providers by fax or phone to collect additional patient information. The information obtained by the CBY Research Associate will allow the CDC, as well as state and local health departments, to better understand the epidemiology of STDs and to inform national and local STD prevention efforts. 

Additional duties will include promoting sexual health as a member of Youth United Through Health Education (YUTHE), a program of the CHEP Branch of SFDPH. The YUTHE Program is a and designed to introduce youth and young adults to the field of Public Health and address health disparities in San Francisco. Staff are trained to promote sexual health using a culturally appropriate approach to help reduce health disparities among African-American youth in San Francisco, as well as help youth and young adults learn how to protect themselves from HIV and other STDs. The goal of the YUTHE program is for participants to gain a wide range of public health knowledge and on-the-job skills and to increase STD screening and other preventive health services among sexually active adolescents in San Francisco in order to ultimately decrease the rates of STDs and reduce health disparities among youth.

This is a full-time, temporary, grant funded, benefited position. Employment is provided by Heluna Health.

This position requires some evening and weekend hours.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Attempt to reach patients by telephone to conduct interviews with professional skill and tone, while assuring patient of confidentiality, privacy, and comfort with sexual health matters and questions
  • Accurately collect and record information obtained from patients and providers via phone interviews, in-person survey administration, and fax on to forms or entered directly into database systems
  • Maintain secured, confidential data and patient information at all times.
  • Work collaboratively and individually to create a strategic plan for peer-led health education events/activities
  • Regularly present interview progress.
  • Process cases assigned within the allocated time period
  • Perform all SSuN-related activities per established protocols and procedures
  • Attend sexual health and professional development trainings
  • Conduct street and venue-based outreach activities in Bayview, Hunters Point, Fillmore/Western Addition, Potrero Hill, Sunnydale Visitacion Valley, Castro, South of Market, and Tenderloin in all weather conditions
  • Builds relationships with communities to encourage routine sexual health screening
  • Develop appropriate workshops and present to groups to address sexual health topics for youth and community-based organizations; as well as provide information and referrals in person and via social media platforms
  • Meet weekly with supervisor to maintain communication and progress towards established goals
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience

High school graduate or GED and/or currently enrolled in college

One (1) year verifiable experience, gained within the last three (3) years, working with the public and with youth and/or adults

Other Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly including attention to the minute details of a project or task
  • Knowledge of STDs and HIV
  • Must be able to operate a computer; Highly desirable to be proficient with Microsoft Office suite (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Knowledge of Photoshop is desirable
  • Ability to show initiative; not afraid to ask questions
  • Ability to plan and use good judgment; ability to work independently and efficiently
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communications skills with youth and adults
  • Ability to communicate in writing clearly and concisely using appropriate spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Experience using social media platforms, including but not limited to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat and any emerging channels
  • Ability to organize and manage a variety of projects simultaneously and complete duties in a timely manner
  • Detail-oriented with ability to follow instructions and follow-up on assigned tasks
  • Able to effectively work as part of a team

Special Qualifications

  • Must be flexible, due to evening/weekend hours for conducting interviews and participating in community events
  • Willingness to be trained on STDs and work with the public
  • Must be comfortable speaking to groups about sexual health issues
  • Must have access to reliable transportation (BART, Muni, bus, car, etc.)
  • Must be comfortable and willing/able to work in any neighborhood in San Francisco, particularly Bayview, Hunters Point, Fillmore/Western Addition, Potrero Hill, Sunnydale Visitacion Valley, Castro, South of Market, and Tenderloin in all weather conditions
  • Must be willing to work with diverse ethnic groups and individuals of diverse sexual orientations, sexual interests, gender identities, youth and adults
  • Must be willing to be cross-trained to help address other health issues, including but not limited to nutrition, healthy retail, smoking cessation, cannabis education, and heart disease
  • Must be willing to be trained in sample collection related to STD/HIV testing
  • Must have ability to walk several blocks for a couple of hours at a time
  • Must be willing to wear YUTHE apparel while conducting workshops at community events and street outreach in the field
  • Must be available to attend regular SSuN and branch meetings and other meetings as assigned
