The National Down Syndrome Congress has an immediate opening for an experienced Development Director.

About The Organization

Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, the National Down Syndrome Congress (NDSC) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to an improved world for individuals with Down syndrome.  Founded in 1973, we are the leading national resource of support and information for anyone touched by or seeking to learn about Down syndrome, from the moment of prenatal diagnosis through adulthood.  The purpose of the NDSC is to promote the interests of people with Down syndrome and their families through advocacy, public awareness and information.  When we empower individuals and families from all demographical backgrounds, we reshape the way people understand and experience Down syndrome.

Position Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Director leads the organization’s fundraising efforts by managing and growing all current revenue streams, and creating new opportunities to add to the current development portfolio.  The Development Director will also work strategically to create a short, and long term plan that allows the department to grow its human talent, while funding the overall growth of organization.  Because the staff at the National office is a small and close knit group, the Development Director will need to possess the ability to work and produce independently, as well as work in partnership with different team members to assure success.  Those key partnerships will be -

Engagement Director:  The NDSC Engagement Director works to create the organization’s messaging, and is responsible for the social media efforts needed and created by the Development Director in all areas of fundraising to include; campaigns, events, online fundraising, year-End, and any other endeavor as needed by the Development Director.  The Engagement Director also currently works as a compliment to the organization’s events as the logistical specialist, which allows the Development Director to concentrate on the higher, overarching endeavors.

Program and Partnerships Director:  The Development Director will work with the Program and Partnerships Director to garner statistics and information for grants for the organization’s program activities, and will work to create some of the partnerships that need both fundraising and program components.

Convention Director:  The Development Director works closely with the Convention Director to create the sponsorship and onsite convention fundraising goals. 

Key Responsibilities

The Development Director is responsible for (but not limited to) the following:

  • Maintain and grow the organization’s individual and major giving program
  • Identify and travel to meet with new potential major donors
  • Obtain a minimum of $275,000 in Annual Convention sponsorship
  • Through the annual Convention dinner and merchandise sales, secure an additional $50,000 onsite at the Annual Convention
  • Direct the efforts of the annual golf classic Chairman and committee, to secure a minimum of $20,000 in sponsorship and hole sponsors, to obtain 100+ golfers, secure food and beverage donations, obtain donated items for a successful raffle, and oversee all fundraising components outside of media and logistics.  In addition, the goal for the 2020 fire ball drop will be $7500+
  • Work with the 2020 Gala Host Committee to oversee and actively participate in obtaining sponsorship for the inaugural event, to garner at least 150 attendees, to secure silent auction items, and to oversee all fundraising components outside of media and logistics.  Meet weekly, via telephone, with the Engagement Director and the organization’s PR firm (Hope Beckham), to lead the overarching strategy for the inaugural Gala.
  • Expansion of organization’s current Planned Giving opportunities
  • Responsible for the annual Year-End Campaign, and the annual increase in revenue to accompany each year.  The goal for 2020 is $100,000
  • Responsible for maintaining, and growing, the organization’s overall sponsorship program
  • Research and write at least 3 grants per quarter, to support the organization’s program efforts and overall general funding
  • Oversee and re-position the organization’s Development Council, and development Regional Councils, to support and further the overall fundraising goals of the organization
  • Must travel to attend both NDSC Annual Board Meetings (one at the Annual Convention, the other in January of each year)
  • Must be available to travel to Convention cities in advance of the event to obtain donors and sponsorship
  • Must be available to travel to different areas to meet with potential new major donors for the organization
  • Responsible for creating the annual Development Department Budget

Experience & Requirements

  • Must have a minimum of 7 years of successful fundraising and development experience, preferably on a national scale
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of grant research and writing experience
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to create graphics for fundraising and campaign endeavors a plus, but not a requirement
  • Must possess an understanding of all diverse communities, and how to work within those communities to leverage partnerships and funding
  • Must have a successful track record with event and overall organizational sponsorship attainment
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years in event planning
  • Must be willing to work to create community partnerships that will translate into fundraising avenues
  • Must have a deep knowledge of the ability to diversify funding streams within a non-profit
  • Must have non-profit budgeting experience
  • Must be able to work independently to lead their department, while also able to work in successfully in partnership with other NDSC staff team members
  • Must have advanced computer skills and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook), must be very aware of all social media avenues, and must have a basic knowledge of donor management systems.
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus, but not a requirement

Position Environment and Offerings:

  • The position is fulltime, with offices located in Roswell, GA
  • Flexible hours of 9-5 or 10-6
  • After the first 90 days, the organization offers some possible remote working opportunities
