Description
The Commonwealth Club is the largest and oldest public forum in the United States. Founded in 1903, the Club is a membership organization that hosts daily lectures and panel discussions on issues of public concern. The Club publishes a magazine, hosts a weekly national radio broadcast, produces podcasts and online videos, and is the leader in its field nationally and internationally. The Club is a fast-paced, lively and stimulating environment with nearly 500 programs a year ranging from literature to the economy.
Position Overview
The Commonwealth Club is recruiting an experienced director with a passion for public issues and dialogue, interested in helping to grow Commonwealth Club Silicon Valley (CCSV). Primary activities are event planning and organizing, outreach and marketing and event management, in collaboration with the vice president of Club programs (VPCP), the vice president of membership & marketing (VPMM), the vice president of media & editorial (VPME), and the principal director of programs and literary arts (PDPLA).

Essential Job Functions
Program Planning and Organizing:
• Together with VPs and the PDPLA, plan, book and organize weekly Commonwealth Club programs in Silicon Valley/the South Bay
• Track civic issues and increase community-focused programs
• Work with VPs, PDPLA, and CFO to create and manage the budget for the Silicon Valley office
Outreach and Marketing:
• Plan and execute community events and nurture community relationships and partnerships
• Together with PDPLA, effectively utilize Silicon Valley Advisory Council (SVAC), a volunteer leadership group, for support and guidance
• Event promotion, audience development, social media and media outreach
• Media relations for coverage of events
• Branding and marketing of the Club in Silicon Valley overall – events, membership, image, etc., with SVAC members, PDPLA and other staff
• Membership development/fulfillment/recruitment at events, in coordination with San Francisco membership staff and volunteer support
• Coordinate with Silicon Valley director of development for grant proposals and other fundraising activities
Event Management: (working in cooperation with PDPLA to coordinate these activities)
• Manage email communication with attendees
• Management of volunteer coordinator, volunteers, and event staff
• Oversee event staff and volunteers to accomplish the following tasks:
- Event check-in
- Book sales
• Post-event communication with attendees
Desirable Qualifications
• 4-year college degree
• Minimum five years’ experience in nonprofit or other relevant work
• Excellent writing and speaking skills
• Knowledge of and ongoing interest in current affairs
• Commitment to the importance of free speech and open dialogue
• Familiarity with institutions, personalities and issues in Silicon Valley/the South Bay
• Outgoing personality, enjoys networking, recruiting speakers, members, participants
• Experience with InDesign, MS Office Suite, Raiser’s Edge a plus. Will be trained on new Patron Manager, a Salesforce-based CRM system
• Experienced in use of social media
• Excellent references
• Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends
• Ability to lift 25 pounds
