Departmental Overview

The UC Berkeley Labor Center, at the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE), UC Berkeley, has an opening for a policy research coordinator. Founded in 1964, the UC Berkeley Labor Center works on the most pressing economic challenges affecting working families in California and across the country, with a focus on policies that affect low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color. The Labor Center provides timely, policy-relevant research on labor and employment issues for policymakers and stakeholders, and conducts training for a new and diverse generation of worker leaders and students.

Responsibilities

The policy research coordinator will join and help to grow an important new project on the “future of work” at the Labor Center, focused on understanding the impact of emerging technologies on work, the gig economy, and new models of worker organizing. The coordinator will report to the project director and provide day-to-day management of complex research projects involving Labor Center staff as well as multiple external research partners. The coordinator will also contribute to research and report writing, on a range of topics including new policy models being developed in response to future of work issues. Because this is a rapidly expanding initiative, the coordinator will play a central role in partnering with the director to ensure strong project focus, effective internal systems, and effective management of stakeholder relationships.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to join a nationally-recognized team of researchers and policy analysts that is working on some of the most important challenges facing working families.

• Leads day-to-day project management, including coordinating project teams, setting deadlines and deliverables, and ensuring successful completion.

• Contributes to policy research and report drafting in a range of potential areas relevant to workplace technologies, gig work, and worker organizing.

• Helps to manage relationships with stakeholders, ensuring regular engagement, drafting of project descriptions and updates, managing the project's listserv, and troubleshooting issues.

• Manages internal organizational relationships with other departments (such as communications and publications).

• Works with partners to organize conferences and working meetings.

• Prepares grant proposals and reports in concert with program leadership.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience required.

• Demonstrated experience in managing projects independently, meeting project timelines, managing stakeholder relationships, and communicating with internal and external stakeholders in a productive and timely manner.

• Demonstrated experience in working on and writing about public policy issues.

• Ability to take initiative and manage projects with minimal supervision, including strong time management skills and ability to meet tight deadlines.

• Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills, including exceptional writing skills.

• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

• High comfort level with productivity software and communication platforms.

• Ability to work discreetly with confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in public policy, sociology, economics, or a related field. Substantial relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of this requirement.

• Two or more years of project management experience.

• Experience working on “future of work” issues.
