About the Job:

The Conflict Intervention Service (CIS) of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Program (ADR) is a landlord-tenant mediation program funded by a grant from the City of San Francisco to provide dispute resolution services, conflict negotiation and communications coaching, among other methods, to individuals experiencing housing conflicts. The goals of the program are to support the stabilization of tenancies to the benefit of tenants and landlords alike. The successful candidate will be an attorney-mediator with the following experience and skills:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Licensed attorney with a minimum of 5 years of experience
  • Experience with landlord-tenant law and rental disputes
  • Fluency in Mandarin and/or Cantonese, required

SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Conduct initial case investigation which assumes contact with disputants, case managers, property managers, social workers, or any and all necessary parties to the resolution of the presenting conflict
  • Clarify issues, concerns, needs, and interests of all parties involved
  • Obtain appropriate documentation as may be needed to aid in the mediation of disputes, e.g. a tenant’s lease, income recertification form, previous stipulated agreement, etc.
  • Provide communication advice, guidance and coaching
  • Conduct initial meetings with disputants to enrich resolution opportunities and prepare for mediation
  • Perform formal mediations
  • Prepare written conflict resolution agreements
  • Provide referrals to legal assistance and social service supports, when appropriate
  • Perform after care check ins with parties, when needed
  • Maintain independent mediation caseload while also participating in team mediation strategy support meetings
  • Assist with in person visits to discuss and present about CIS and appear at community events
  • Serve as point of contact with community partners for referrals to and from the program
