The Organization

The Alliance of California Traditional Arts (ACTA), a national leader in the folk and traditional arts field, is seeking a full-time program manager to administer a large, statewide traditional arts in the prisons program. Founded in 1997 to support the health, vibrancy, and evolution of California’s diverse cultural traditions, ACTA operates statewide programs from its offices in Fresno, Los Angeles and San Francisco. These programs include advocacy, apprenticeships, grantmaking, convenings, and support for artists working in Promise Zones, the prison system, and select local communities.

ACTA’s Arts in Corrections (AIC) program began in 2013 as a pilot program that placed traditional artists in multi-week residencies in three correctional facilities. Today, a staff of 40 teaching artists conducts the $1.3 million AIC program in 18 facilities throughout California.

ACTA’s artist residents lead long-term, participatory classes inside prisons for both men and women experiencing incarceration. Their workshops connect students with their cultural heritage through art forms like Mexican son jarocho, Afro-Colombian percussion, storytelling, Native American bead-work, and Danza Azteca. To get a fuller perspective of the work, you are encouraged to explore the Arts in Correction page on ACTA’s website, which includes background information, a listing of artists and residencies, photographs and video documentation of the program.

The ideal candidate to further the success of ACTA’s AIC Program will share ACTA’s and the AIC Program’s mission and have experience and passion for working deeply with marginalized populations, particularly communities of color and the incarcerated. We are seeking an experienced go-getter who can work independently as well as lead a large team (two program staff and 40 teaching artists) and work collaboratively with multiple program partners and staff.
