Job Description

Department or Section:  Theatre Operations

Position Classification:  Technical Director

Position Detail:  Full time salaried

General Description: The Technical Director is responsible for supervision and coordination of all stage management activities, including the management of all aspects of live theatrical productions, crew management, client relations, audio mixing, and light programming for in house, rental, and touring productions. The position reports to the General Manager. The Strand consoles include a Yamaha LS9 for audio and ETC Ion for lights.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College degree in theater production, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in technical theater operations, including lighting, sound, and rigging systems
  • Leadership experience in live production technical direction and crew management
  • Ability to supervise union and non-union stagehands, electricians and carpenters
  • Ability to coordinate all facets of major theatrical productions
  • Knowledge of industry tools, equipment, safety standards including Mac/PC, Q Lab, etc
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends, holidays

Typical work responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Stage Management Policies and Procedures
    • Coordinate all technical aspects of staging, scenery, lighting, sound, carpentry and electronic theatrical systems
    • Coordinate all technical requirements for resident and touring productions
    • Schedule load-in and load-out for resident and touring companies
    • Review and evaluate production feasibility and application of requirements and ideas with potential production companies
    • Ensure physical and technical readiness of house equipment
    • Interface with Touring Production Managers to coordinate production requirements
    • Provide special event technical support when needed
    • Coordinate with the Fire Marshall as needed
    • Assist management in developing, coordinating and managing all labor and production expense budgets for in-house productions
    • Act as the Safety Officer for all stage areas
  • Staff Supervision and Management
    • Recruit, interview, select, train and evaluate department personnel
    • Plan, organize and assign all day-to-day work assignments for department personnel
    • Monitor production of all shifts as required
    • Coordinate staffing needs for all productions. Establish number of workers, time and materials required to stage productions
    • Monitor and approve payroll as required
    • Motivate a high level of commitment in time, effort and creativity
  • Administrative Duties
    • Obtain the necessary equipment and supplies for maintenance and repair
    • Monitor and control the inventory of equipment, materials, tools and supplies to fulfill the needs of the Theatre, while maintaining appropriate cost controls
    • Research and recommend equipment, tools, materials and supplies for department use
    • Plan and organize long range assignments for maintenance of theater operations
    • Provide show settlement cost information as required
  • High Quality Customer Service
    • Respond to client and staff requests for assistance, additional equipment
    • Assist co-workers with completion of duties to ensure client satisfaction
    • Meet and exceed customer expectations by delivering superior quality service and teamwork
  • Safety and Security
    • Observe and practice safe working techniques
    • Understand and demonstrate the correct use, storage, and labeling of chemicals
    • Correct or report safety hazards
    • Understand and acknowledge best practices for building evacuation and emergency situations
    • Assist with building evacuation when necessary
    • Be knowledgeable of policies regarding safe working procedures and conditions on the premises of and be responsible for practicing such procedures
    • Report all safety issues, broken, damaged or mal-functioning equipment or Theatre damage
  • Maintenance of Workplace
    • Understand and follow guidelines for protecting our property, and utilizing safe and careful work practices
    • Maintain a clean, orderly personal work space, equipment, and appearance
    • Follow company uniform, dress code, and grooming guidelines to present a neat, clean appearance
    • Monitor and schedule cleaning of stage areas, areas including sound booth, storerooms, offices, etc
  • Physical Requirements
    • Ability to lift moderate amounts of weight up to 50 lbs
    • Ability to tolerate moderate contact with cleaning agents
    • Extensive walking, stooping, bending, kneeling and reaching to perform routine set-up duties throughout the facility and facility grounds, including climbing ladders and navigation of catwalk
    • Ability to walk and stand for up to eight (8) hours
       
  • Position requires irregular work schedules and the performance of work assignments, which may not be directly related to job specifications. Attendance is consistent and tardiness is avoided.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in dealing effectively with unscheduled events/changed priorities/incomplete information.
  • Adjust priorities and respond with a sense of urgency to matters of importance. Keep management promptly and fully informed of any situation that requires immediate attention.
  • Such other duties, functions and special projects and responsibilities as assigned.
