YR Media (formerly Youth Radio) is seeking a Director of Career Education.

The Director will lead to multi-faceted media education and employment pathways for youth ages 14-24. This position involves leading the team in iterating program design to ensure skills alignment with the media industry and create opportunities for all participants to enjoy success, and the hiring and supervision of the education, employment and support services staff.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are critical, as is experienced with collaborative strategic planning. Experience in media (journalism and/or arts), career technical education, or other skills-oriented education modalities are essential assets for successful performance in this role.

Job Summary

The Director of Career Education will lead the management and innovation of YR Media’s youth trajectory - from media training to production internship to portfolio - ensuring that the trajectory is aligned with the industry and that participants are matriculating successfully through every YR opportunity.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Leads staff in developing and implementing YR Media’s interlocking programs including Media Education, Workforce Pathways, and Support Services, impacting ~300 youth annually in Oakland.
  • Oversees implementation and continuous data-driven improvement of media and technology education classes that begin and rotate quarterly.
  • Oversees the internship placement program for the workforce pathways that offers youth on-the-job training at YR’s news and arts production platforms.
  • Oversees the case management team to ensure participants are able to access support/resources as needed to stay in the program and achieve their goals.
  • Works across teams to ensure evaluation instruments and methodology inform program innovation and communicate impact.
  • Builds and nurtures a team culture among teams coordinating the above activities to ensure program impact and contribute to the professional development of staff.
  • Responsible for budgeting, financial reporting, and timely coordination with finance staff as needed.
  • Collaborates with Development Team to manage funding relationships and ensure deliverables are met.
  • In addition to these responsibilities, performs other activities as assigned and required for program impact.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university, or relevant professional certification and experience.
  • 7-10 years of progressive promotion through career education and/or media environments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to creating and supporting equitable learning and work environments.
  • A demonstrated capacity to develop effective working relationships with individuals and organizations reflecting a broad range of identities, perspectives, and experiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and teamwork skills.
  • Strong written communication skills, for internal and external purposes.
  • Demonstrated ability to build key community and industry partnerships, highly desired.
  • Experience working or collaborating directly with low-income young people of color, highly desired.

Supervisory

This position supervises and oversees performance management of designated members of the Media Education, Workforce Pathways, and Support Services teams,and may provide oversight to interns and contractors.

Work Environment

This is a full time, exempt position. Approximately 90% of the time spent on the job involves use of a monitor; therefore, must be able to sit for extended periods and to utilize standard ergonomics practices. When not traveling, primarily works in an office environment, requiring the following activity: lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 20 pounds, kneeling, bending. Must be able to use standard office equipment.

Requires periodic domestic airline travel to attend conferences and meetings. Ability to carry small amounts of consumer material on business trips necessary.
