Executive Director

 

POSITION SUMMARY:  

Reporting to the Chair of the Chapter Board of Directors, the Executive Director acts as the Chapter’s chief executive officer and is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the day-to-day operations of the chapter.

KEY COMPETENCIES:

Executive Leadership: Demonstrated experience with overseeing business operations and activities to fulfill organizational goals, set strategic direction and provide overall decision making.

Governance: Familiarity with effective governance practices, board development, strategic planning and board policies and procedures.

Fundraising: Experience with establishing and achieving fundraising goals through peer-to-peer campaigns, special events, major giving and corporate support.

Social Service Agency Management: Familiarity with implementing services and support programs, program assessment, and identifying opportunities to innovate in response to unmet need.

Staff Management: Possess proficient communication skills, ability to develop career development plans with staff, provide high-impact performance feedback, and capability to adapt organizational structure to develop and keep a high-achieving staff team.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

Planning and Organizational Management: Develops strategic goals and operational plans, working with the Chapter Board of Directors and appropriate staff to accomplish The ALS Association’s mission. Sets staff goals and objectives and conducts regular written performance reviews and evaluations. Implements board-approved policies and consistent business practices.

Board Support and Leadership: Serves as primary staff liaison to all Board members through the Board Chair and provides support to Board Chair in specific leadership roles and tasks. Informs Board members of potential funding sources and works with the board to solicit funds. Participates in the ALS Association-wide conferences as appropriate.

Financial Management: Submits and supervises annual operating budget in conjunction with Treasurer and Board Chair, appropriate staff and Board committee chairs, submitting to the Board for approval. Monitors receipts, expenditures and cash flow; reports to finance committee monthly. Creates and maintains a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk and enhance the accuracy of the organization’s reported financial results.

Program Management and Evaluation: Understands and supports the needs of individuals with ALS and their families. Monitors ongoing effectiveness of programs and services through measuring objectives and evaluating outcomes.

Fund Development: Serves as the Chapter’s chief fund development officer, cultivating and stewarding current supporters while identifying potential new sources of funding for Chapter programs. Submits and supervises an annual fund development plan designed to create cost effective and on-going sources of revenue to ensure income stability and growth.

Communications/Public Relations: Leads the Chapter’s communication efforts and ensures that all staff and volunteers who interact with the public do so in an informed and effective manner. Builds trust and commitment with multiple partners in the general and medical community.

Public Policy: Builds an effective advocacy network and participates in public policy efforts at both state and national ALS Association levels.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College degree required (advanced degree preferred) or the equivalent in education and work experience.
  • Seven to ten years of management experience, preferably in a non-profit environment.
  • Team leader with ability to interface with all levels of staff and volunteers.
  • Strategic thinking skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and independently make sound decisions.
  • Strong written and oral communications.
  • Proven track record in revenue growth with an emphasis in major gifts and demonstrated knowledge of special events.
  • Successful management of budgets and record of meeting specific financial targets.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task, establish priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software. Experience in using donor and constituent -management databases and understanding of various computer systems.
  • Some travel involved; may require weekend work for special events.
