Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) is seeking a Director of Finance to be located in the organization’s headquarters in downtown Atlanta.  Founded in 1971, GLSP is a nonprofit law firm whose mission is to provide civil legal services for persons with low incomes, creating equal access to justice and opportunities out of poverty. 

With ten regional offices across the State of Georgia, GLSP serves clients in the 154 Georgia counties outside the metropolitan Atlanta area. GLSP receives a substantial amount of its funding from the federal Legal Services Corporation (LSC), with the remainder of its funding coming from various private and public sources. 

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance is a key part of the Executive Management team and has primary, day‑to­-day responsibility for financial planning and implementing, managing, and controlling all financial‑related activities for the organization. This includes direct responsibility for accounting, financial management, forecasting, budgeting, strategic planning, and grant and contract financial compliance. The position will drive the use of technology within the accounting department in order to streamline operations and ensure that the department has the capacity to support the accounting and grant reporting needs of GLSP. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the overall financial operations of GLSP, and supervise and direct the work of the Accounting Department staff.
  • Ensure that GLSP complies with LSC regulations, requirements, policies, including the LSC Audit Guide, as well as those of other funders, and with generally accepted accounting principles and practices.  Lead annual audit process in coordination with outside auditors.  Support the preparation of the annual 990 filings with outside tax accountants. Manage the daily banking and bi-weekly cash flow requirements as well as long-term investments per Board policies.
  • Monitor local office and program-wide spending by reviewing budgets and financial statements. 
  • Analyze the firm’s financial position including forecasting, supporting the budget and strategic planning processes and determine the optimal accounting solutions that meet GLSP needs and reflect GLSP values.
  • Prepare and deliver monthly financial reports to the Executive Management Team and the Finance Committee of the Board.
  • Prepare project budgets for grant proposals and other potential funders as needed.  Work with the Executive Management Team to review, revise, and finalize annual budgets, and to prepare a consolidated budget.
  • Oversee the preparation and distribution of timely monthly budget status reports to managers and project supervisors by the 15th of the month.
  • Provide support to the Executive Management Team, managers, and Board of Directors in the development, implementation, and maintenance of a sound financial management system for the Program.
  • Manage the Program’s client trust account in compliance with State Bar Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Visit or make contact with field offices as needed to maintain proper operations of local offices.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Information Technology on the development of its annual budget and accounting related items.
  • Manage relationships with outside vendors such as bankers, insurance brokers, retirement plan administrators, and financial auditors.
  • Serve as staff liaison and resource to Board Finance Committee and Audit Committee.
  • Communicate with and report to the Board Treasurer and Finance Committee and conduct quarterly Finance Committee meetings.
  • Maintain documented accounting and grant reporting policies and procedures.
  • Handle all financial transactions and reporting for the separate Georgia Legal Services Foundation, which is a 509 (a) (3) Supporting Organization, including quarterly financial statements and preparing the 990.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. degree in Accounting or Finance is required; five (5) or more years of nonprofit accounting experience at the senior accountant level or higher; CPA preferred.  Experience with A‑133, A-50, FASB 116, 117 audits and IRS Form 990 is preferred.
  • Proven communication skills utilizing a variety of tools like spreadsheets, graphs, written narrative, and oral methods that present complex financial information in a concise, easy to understand format. Samples required.
  • Proven ability to see the big picture, anticipates and resolves issues, and organizes details.  Interest in working with a mission-driven organization.
  • Experience with and commitment to working with a diverse workforce.
  • Recent experience and/or exposure to various accounting systems and subsidiary systems is preferred; knowledge of recent improvements and best practices in using accounting/finance‑related software required.  Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge and Raiser’s Edge and intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
  • Proven attention to detail as realized in numeric accuracy, precise labels, and aesthetically pleasing presentations of the data is required.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and good judgment is required. Demonstrated ability to analyze quantitative and qualitative information is required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a committed team, but also be self-motivated.  Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines as needed.
  • Ability to travel within Georgia approximately 5% of the time is required.
