COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a masterfully creative Communications Manager that is able to thrive in developing content that can display the complex spectrum and intersectional components of Black Maternal Health, Rights, and Justice through the promotion and support of BMMA’s initiatives. The ideal candidate is an excellent verbal and written communicator, adept with print and digital communications as well as media relations. Additionally, the candidate should be effective in using design graphics and images to help convey information; be proficient in media, website, and social media analytics; and be able to translate information into impact reports. The ideal candidate should be flexible and adaptable to dynamic working environments, and be ready to help a growing organization develop its communication capacity.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience building social media channels and executing social media strategy for maximum engagement, particularly for mission-driven non-profits or through cause-based marketing
- Proficient in: Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Acrobat, basic HTML , Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and YouTube, Hootsuite (other social media management/monitoring tools - a PLUS!), basic HTML and website publishing, especially via Wordpress (or other CMS skills), and Constant Contact (or other email marketing platform)
- Intermediate skills in photography and video creation and editing skills for social media
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Bachelor's or Master’s degree in communications, journalism, public health or related fields
- Proficient knowledge in Black feminism and experience working in the fields of public health, reproductive justice, human rights, social sciences, and/or maternal and infant health
- 3+ years of proven experience producing a wide variety of high-quality, multimedia communications products for nonprofits, academia, coalitions, and/or public health agencies
- 2+ years of experience developing and managing collaborative partnerships and soliciting input from a broad set of stakeholders
- Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills with meticulous attention to details
- Demonstrated ability to develop routines to manage workloads and organize work efficiently
- Possess a good level of emotional intelligence to work effectively with a small team and skilled in relationship and consensus-building
- Strong critical thinking, decision-making and project management skills
- Strong sense of professionalism and reliability
- Self-starter with proven ability to work independently, respond quickly, and meet deadlines
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement an annual strategic communications plan rooted in BMMA’s values, and establish communications processes for BMMA initiatives and programs.
- Formalize templates, style guides, preferred language, key messages, and brand strategy to ensure consistent use among internal and external partners.
- Oversee media relations, maintaining media lists and seeking ways to respond to developing stories.
- Spearhead organizational advocacy statements; draft press releases, media advisories, op-eds, letters to the editor, talking points, and other media materials.
- Lead the development and management of the annual Black Maternal Health Week campaign, and ensure a sound and robust strategy for collaboration and impact with internal and external partners.
- Collaborate with staff on social media strategy; develop new ways to share our message with external audiences; monitor the organization’s online engagement, and develop social media toolkits.
- Manage communication with partners, funders, and stakeholders to strengthen relationships and expand support toward organizational sustainability.
- Develop and compile quarterly reports and web analytics to inform content creation; setting benchmarks and goals to track progress and growth.
- Serve as traditional and digital media relations liaison for BMMA, and manage media relationships with key publications and journalists.
- Package source materials in maternal and reproductive health, rights, and justice to shape educational documents, messaging, and other communications products.
