Census Coordinator

Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 23,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer)

MRNY is a multi-service organization.  Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above -- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services: We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish-language literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation, and in-school and after-school youth programs. We have a robust legal program that offers direct representation across a spectrum of practice areas, including employment law, immigration law, housing and benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights; we also take on impact litigation as a strategy for achieving broad change. Our health program offers facilitated enrollment into health insurance programs and SNAP benefits, a community health worker home visit program, nutrition education and emergency food pantries, health care navigation, and more."

Current Opening:

Make the Road New York seeks a full-time Census Coordinator to develop and execute a coordinated organizing, canvassing, and communications strategy in a coordinated citywide initiative to ensure a full, fair count in the 2020 Census. This position will lead a vital effort with our organizing and direct services teams to educate immigrant New Yorkers and working-class people of color in our core neighborhoods to ensure they complete the 2020 Census.

The principal role of the Census Coordinator will be to work with our organizing, services, and communications teams across our five sites to ensure that they conduct effective outreach in their neighborhoods. This work will include, but not be limited to:

• Work with the organizing and services team to facilitate and coordinate training and outreach in core communities.
• Lead a canvass team to do large-scale targeted field outreach.
• Develop and implement tracking systems to ensure that staff meet their goals.
• Analyze data from across the organization on a daily basis and work with staff to conduct this analysis and improve their work. Report on this data.
• Lead coordination with other organizations regarding Census outreach.
• Develop high-quality and culturally- and linguistically-sensitive outreach materials.
• Play a key role in communications efforts related to ensuring a full, fair count. 

Applicants will need to demonstrate the following abilities or characteristics:

• Prior canvassing or organizing experience is required
• To lead and manage a team of staff
• Data management experience
• Provide analysis about outreach performance
• Possess excellent time management skills, punctuality, and attention to detail
• Ability to develop and maintain strong institutional relationships with a diverse range of partners
• Hustle & Commitment to social justice
• Must be willing to work frequent weekday evenings and weekend days
• Ability to work in a team and receive feedback
• A willingness to travel as needed and enthusiasm for the goals and policies of Make the Road New York
• Spanish and English bilingual; other languages a plus
• Preferred: experience working with the Voter Activation Network (VAN) database and/or Salesforce  
• Preferred: driver's license and continuous access to a car.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Starting salary is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education. Generous package of vacation, personal and sick days. Excellent health and dental coverage and family leave policies.
