About the Little by Little School Readiness Program
The evidence–based Little by Little School Readiness Program engages low-income families and fosters early literacy skills to improve school success for children participating in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program. Little by Little is a program of Heluna Health/PHFE WIC, funded by First 5 LA and serves over 60,000 WIC participants in LA County each year. In addition, the Little by Little School Readiness Program has been piloted in Tulsa, Oklahoma (funded by the George Kaiser Family Foundation) and currently serves more than 10,000 WIC participants each year. Position Summary
The Associate Director of Advancement is an experienced fundraising professional with a direct report to the Director of Advancement. This individual will spend 50% of their time supporting agency wide fundraising initiatives for Heluna Health and 50 % of their time supporting the long-term sustainability efforts for the Little by Little School Readiness Program (a program of Heluna Health).
He or she will serve as the primary development professional engaged in donor identification (individual, corporate, foundation), prospecting, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. As a frontline development leader, he or she will work to with the CEO and the Director of Advancement to develop a robust strategic fundraising plan for Heluna Health and the Little by Little Program with an emphasis on diversifying revenue streams through philanthropic initiatives.
The Development Department
The Associate Director of Advancement reports to the Director of Advancement and is part of a development team that also includes a Development Manager and a Manager of Marketing and Communications.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Associate Director of Advancement, in coordination with the Director of Advancement and the CEO, will be charged with creating a comprehensive fundraising plan for Heluna Health. In addition, she/he will work closely with select Heluna Health client partners to assist with and support their fundraising goals. This position also supports all sustainability efforts for the Little by Little School Readiness Program. This individual should have broad and comprehensive development skills. Responsibilities will include:
Annual Giving
- Develop and implement creative giving strategies and programs to cultivate, solicit, and steward annual donors, with major emphasis on building and expanding a robust annual giving program.
- Oversee all stewardship activities (including the development of donor recognition opportunities);
- Ensure that donors and prospective donors understand the impact of their philanthropic support to cultivate and ensure a vibrant culture of giving.
Corporate and Foundation Giving
- Draft proposals, letters of inquiry, reports and other communication material for institutional donors including foundations, corporations, and government entities. Modify solicitation templates based on donors’ interests.
- Work closely with Heluna Health/Little by Little by program staff to develop and deliver customized proposals, solicitations and reports for unrestricted and program-specific grants as well as corporate gifts and event sponsorships.
- Maintain an expectation of excellence in both written and verbal communications, as well as a dedication to superior customer service with an emphasis on relationship building.
Special Events
- Mange all aspects of one major annual event and smaller donor cultivation events in support of fundraising initiatives including event site selection, keynote speaker, caterer, etc. and all manage logistics associated with the event.
- Solicit individual and corporate donors for support/sponsorship.
- Coordinate all event collateral with Marketing and Communications Manager.
- Compile and maintain mailing lists in coordination with the Marketing Dept.
Volunteer Support
- Create and nurture opportunities for volunteers in support of fundraising initiatives including but not limited to a “Young Professionals” group that can be nurtured and groomed for future volunteer leadership roles.
- Marketing, outreach and recruitment of new volunteers with targeted recruitment based on fundraising/program needs.
- Communicate with volunteers with a focus on personal connections and responsiveness to needs.
Other
- Stay abreast of fundraising trends and issues, maintaining knowledge of available training and educational opportunities to expand and develop necessary skills.
- Maintain research and moves management records in electronic and paper form, as necessary.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Demonstrated (minimum of 5 to 7 years) track record of securing large philanthropic gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations.
- Experience building and sustaining a successful annual fund program.
- Experience fundraising for large institutions in the health/social services sector preferred.
- Special Events experience required.
- Excellent writing skills specifically geared towards fundraising including proposals, corporate solicitations, case statements, digital campaigns, special event collateral and donor recognition/thank you letters.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written presentation skills.
- Experience with digital fundraising campaigns.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills, with a demonstrated track record of establishing effective systems that foster collaboration and improve efficiency.
- Demonstrated analytical skills related to donor research.
- Ability to think strategically, analytically and creatively.
- Proficiency with Word, Excel, Outlook; knowledge of Salesforce donor databases helpful.
- Ability to work with highly sensitive, confidential information using excellent judgment at all times. Demonstrated ability to set and manage priorities under tight deadlines with an outcomes-oriented approach.
