Forest Protection Advocate and Lobbyist in Washington, DC.

Are you an organized, passionate environmental/climate activist in the DC area with the skills to represent an organization committed to forest protection?

Want to use your background in science, law, public policy, education or the non-profit world to fight for legislation to protect forest ecosystems from logging, and mitigate the climate crisis?

We’re looking for an outgoing, tech-savvy, self-starter with a strong connection to nature who will relish the opportunity to build relationships with legislators and their staff in order to advance our goals of forest protection and climate change mitigation.

Job Description:

To work full-time as a Forest Protection Advocate/Lobbyist in a satellite office in Washington D.C..

Core Responsibilities:

Educate - Help to integrate the protection of U.S. forests into the climate crisis policy discussion/agenda. Continuously meet with congressional staff and members to introduce them to the threats our nation’s forests face from logging, development and backcountry fire suppression. While at the same time helping these congressional officials understand that protecting forests is essential to mitigate the climate and extinction crises and that natural processes, such as fire and drought, help maintain forest integrity and habitat heterogeneity and naturally create forests that are resilient to a changing climate.

Monitor - Attend hearings by relevant committees in both the House and the Senate.  Prepare educational materials prior to the hearing as well as post-hearing analysis for use by other John Muir Project, and/or committee, staff. Identify, analyze and track House and Senate legislation related to logging, fire suppression and climate change.

Represent John Muir Project in coalitions and develop relationships within the DC environmental community.

Advocate:  Vocally oppose regressive legislation that is promoting or funding logging and backcountry fire suppression, actively support legislation that will increase forest and species protections under existing environmental laws and advance progressive legislation that fully incorporates forest protection as a solution to the climate and extinction crises.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or higher – emphasis on science/environmental studies and/or law/public policy a plus.
  • 2  to 5 years experience in a non-profit, public policy, legal, educational, communication or other related fields. Less experience may be considered depending on the level of education completed.
  • Current or former Washington DC resident or strong ties to the greater D.C. metropolitan area.
  • Travel Required (approximately 10- 15% of time over the course of a year) including public events/conferences/meetings and field visits to some forest ecosystems around the country.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills a must.
  • Critical thinking and the ability to translate complex subject matter so that it is easily understood.
  • Outdoor experience and a love of nature very strongly preferred.
