The Opportunity

Working at the community level in one of New York City’s five boroughs, The Community Coordinator is CEO’s key on the ground representative in City Council District 47, Coney Island. Providing place based services, she/he builds and maintains critical relationships with Community Based Organizations (CBOs) located within the district and enhances the visibility of CEO’s efforts and programs within the designated area. The ideal candidate is a “hands on leader” comfortable with working in the “trenches” to identify and meet the service needs of district residents. Reporting to the Senior Director, this role requires a solution oriented, self starter who works effectively autonomously, and is able to execute on priorities with minimal oversight. The successful candidate must be comfortable working across lines of difference and with internal and external stakeholders at every level.

Who We Are

The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) provides employment services to people with recent criminal convictions. Across the United States, over 6,000 people participate in CEO each year, transitioning to employment that supports themselves, their families, and their communities.

What began as a demonstration project of the Vera Institute of Justice in the 1970s to address employment barriers facing the formerly incarcerated following release in New York City has grown into the leading reentry employment organization in the country, where over 25,000 formerly incarcerated individuals have secured full-time employment since 1996. In 2016, CEO embarked on a 5-year strategic plan to grow to serve 9,000 participants annually. 

Who You Are:

  • You’re deeply dedicated to social justice and perhaps are already working in the re-entry space You come to CEO with 5 years of related experience and preferably a Bachelor’s degree (ideally with a focus on criminal justice, public administration, psychology, social work, or a related liberal arts field) You’re passionate about making an impact on people's lives and interested in guiding them to achieve their career goals through a balance of accountability and empathy You’re a strong task manager and organized worker with the ability to maintain oversight of all of the details as you coordinate many moving pieces You’re a strong relationship builder who can build trust and credibility in the organization, in the communities we serve and with critical stakeholders You're experienced in providing feedback and guidance to clients to encourage their growth and continued development of their knowledge and skills You have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills with the ability to adjust to particular personalities and interaction styles on the spot You’re a strong storyteller, able to translate CEO’s work and impact in a way that connects with residents, elected leaders and internal stakeholders.

The Nitty Gritty

Major responsibilities of the Community Coordinator include but are not limited to:

Outreach and Recruitment:

  • Identify the needs of district residents through observation, connecting with residents and understanding the unique community context that the Coordinator is operating within, Develop strategies to meet the needs of diverse community members through research, dialogue and experimentation; Provides services to community members, as needed, and acts as an advocate for program participants across multiple systems; Presents CEO’s programs and services to interested potential enrollees and community partners; distributes marketing materials; responds to email and phone inquiries. Build and maintain positive relationships with contacts in community based organizations and key community stakeholders.

Intake, Assessment, and Enrollment

  • Documents new participant intakes in CEO’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system in accordance with outlined practices to ensure 100% accuracy and participant’s personal data is secure Facilitates a bi-weekly Pathways 2 Employment orientation class Meet annual participants goals as set by NYC leadership

Engagement activities

  • Meets with program participants weekly to assess barriers to employment and provides tailored coaching sessions to address barriers; Leads program participants through job search activities and connects them with employment opportunities Uses Motivational Interviewing (MI) to elicit change talk and to strengthen participants’ internal motivation to change

Perks and Benefits

The salary for this position is $48,000- $58,000.
