Are you passionate about building relationships and natural resource conservation? The Board of Directors is seeking to fill the full-time position of Executive Director to lead the strategic implementation of Atlanta Audubon Society’s mission, vision, and goals. Atlanta Audubon Society (AAS) is a member-supported, non-profit organization dedicated to building places where birds and people thrive. We are a growing, bird-focused organization that combines serious conservation, education, and advocacy with activities that build community and foster the joy of birding. We are seeking an experienced and passionate strategic leader to enhance our programs through organizational development, impactful advocacy, and continued growth. In addition to these strategic initiatives, we are also seeking candidates with demonstrated success in developing and refining processes and budgets and who have management experience. The successful candidate will be one with a track record in fundraising, who is a creative storyteller capable of sharing the vision of Atlanta Audubon. The Executive Director is accountable to the Board of Directors for ensuring material progress on financial stewardship, implementation of strategic plan, and fostering a healthy organizational culture.

Strategic Responsibilities

  • Ensure the long-term viability of the organization through successful fundraising, in cooperation with the Board and staff, to meet the financial and strategic needs of the organization.
  • Work with the Board of Directors, volunteers, staff, and other key stakeholders to develop and implement short-and long-term strategic plans for AAS; develop thematic programs that produce outcomes in line with the goals and objectives of the strategic plans.
  • See that an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in place.
  • In collaboration with Board members and staff, develop strategies for addressing equity, diversity, and inclusion across the organization internally and externally.

 Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Maintain high levels of quality in all areas of organizational work.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, develop, and evaluate annually all paid staff of the organization.
  • Develop and implement systems to manage strategic objectives, financial analysis, and program reporting; maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  • Regularly communicate with the Board of Directors, including acting as a professional adviser to the Board on all aspects of the organization’s activities.
  • Act as spokesperson for the organization and represent the programs and point of view of the organization to agencies, organizations, and the general public.
  • Actively collaborate with other organizations (nonprofit, businesses and government at the local, state and national levels) to create partnerships that advance AAS’s mission and strategies and create opportunities for cooperative projects and complementary fundraising opportunities.
  • Represent AAS at the national level within the National Audubon and bird conservation networks, and within the Audubon Urban Collaborative Network.
  • Promote as well as oversee participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization's work.

 Qualifications

  •  Undergraduate degree, preferably in an area of science, communications and/or other degree with relevance to this work.  Advanced degree a plus.
  • Experience in a leadership role with an educational, public service, for profit, or non-profit organization with a budget of close to $1,000,000.
  • Flexibility in working occasional weekends and weeknights.
  • Experience as a birder or interest in bird watching a plus.
