Departmental Overview

The Graduate School of Education (GSE) is a complex academic unit whose mission is to provide leadership in advancing the theoretical base of education, analyze the complex social environments of education, and promote the improvement of educational practice. A central mission of the Graduate School of Education is to improve teaching and learning for all students in our schools by preparing exemplary teachers, administrators and school psychologists in exemplary professional preparation programs. The School's credential programs emphasize working with diverse students in urban settings and provide an innovative approach to professional preparation relevant to the age and grade level of the credential sought. GSE programs combine the credential with the master's degree, so that all of our graduates have thorough grounding in educational theory, research, and practice to meet the challenge of working with all types of students.

 

The Senior Director of Fundraising and External Development position involves designing, developing, delivering, and administering fundraising programs. The Fundraiser will work in close collaboration with the Dean to identify new donor prospects through researching background information on potential donors and developing materials, marketing plans, and organizing related programs/events; cultivates, stewards, and may solicit donor prospects.

 

Responsibilities

 

• Serves as an expert or lead development professional in Education in order to identify and cultivate donors capable of making very significant contributions to the Graduate school of Education.

 

• Exercises a high level of independent judgement developing and leading strategies that include complex gift discussions and interactions with high level donors, including business, corporate, and foundation donors.

 

• Works in close collaboration with the Dean and faculty leadership to identify the most promising areas for philanthropic support.

 

• Manages a portfolio of 100 - 125 major gift donor prospects that include the most influential, complex or highest rated donors, typically with the capacity to give $250,000 or more.

 

• Makes at least 80 substantive contacts (e.g., significant moves that advance a relationship).

 

• Travels to visit at least 15 prospective donors and current donors per month.

 

• Qualifies major gift prospects and solicit gifts directly.

 

• Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met and raise at least $2M annually.

 

• Develops, creates, writes, implements, and/or evaluates individualized marketing plans and/or strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major gifts, gift planning, or corporate/foundation prospects (strategies typically require a high degree of innovation).

 

• Analyzes needs and creates strategic and long-range plans for fundraising and other advancement programs, and may have the authority to make commitments and precedent-setting decisions regarding program design, development, and procedures.

 

• Designs and implements strategic plans for the school and individual faculty members which coincide with campus priorities.

 

• Reviews plan on annual basis in order to ensure it continues to be successful.

 

• Works closely with Dean and senior leadership to ensure all needs are being met.

 

• Presents formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects or prepares senior management to present proposals.

 

• Stewards relationships with past and current supporters.

 

• Serves as resource for education research, interacting with prospects, donors, staff and outside professionals to provide information, advice and counsel regarding assigned specialized programs.

 

• Works with Fundraiser 3 and Event Planner to design and implement highly specialized program activities including high level donor events.

 

Required Qualifications

 

• Expert knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations.

 

• Expert knowledge of all aspects of the campus, including current issues of concern for both the campus and throughout higher education generally.

 

• Expert knowledge of the campus including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.

 

• Expert knowledge of all applicable laws, rules, regulations, institutional policies, etc.

 

• Expert written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including advanced political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies, including donors and volunteers.

 

• Expert skill in making persuasive and compelling presentations of campus goals/objectives and in securing gifts.

 

• Expert analytical, critical thinking, problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills.

 

• Expert project/program management skills, including skill in setting and meeting program/project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.

 

Education/Training:

 

• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

• Previous experience as a fundraiser.

 

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
