Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 23,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer)

Make the Road New York's Youth Power Project reaches working class youth of color and supports them in becoming effective thinkers, leaders and change-makers. Make the Road New York is the lead partner to the four high schools on Bushwick Campus Community School. Our School Based Team works inside the campus supporting all four schools.  A community school is a hub of resources, programs, and services that contribute to meeting the needs and building on the strengths of the whole student, family and broader community. It supports culture of community where trust and accountability among all stakeholders are nurtured and strengthened.

Make the Road New York (MRNY) is seeking a full time Bilingual Youth Advocate to be a part of our School Based Team at Bushwick Campus.  This position requires a flexible schedule.  Applicants must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide confidential and supportive counseling and case management to a selected cohort of chronically absent students
  • Supervise two graduate level social work interns
  • Refer students and their families as needed, and assist and/or advocate for students/families to obtain: therapy, benefits, housing, employment, emergency assistance, shelter, after school programs, academic support and additional programs both on campus and off
  • Work closely with students to assess strengths, challenges, needs, and goals, and support them in monitoring and reaching those goals
  • Make home visits and phone calls home to students in cohort when they don’t come to school
  • Work closely with providers and programs in the building to ensure students are attending appointments and programs once referred
  • Develop relationships with school staff to support a team approach and integrate support for struggling students into the community school model
  • Participate in Student Success attendance meetings at all four schools
  • Collaborate with school staff to support success mentoring programs and attendance initiatives at all four schools
  • Participate in all required staff, community school meetings and professional development sessions
  • Create and maintain student files in accordance with grant requirements

Requirements:

  • MSW required; SIFI certified a plus
  • Eligible to work in the US
  • Experience working with adolescents;
  • Must be fully bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Commitment to social justice, knowledge of community organizations, and interest in building a grassroots movement;

Job Competencies:

  • Strong outreach, interpersonal, writing, and communication skills;
  • Strong ability to work with a team as well as independently;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders;

Compensation and Benefits:

Competitive annual salary based on a democratically designed salary scale, depending on relevant work experience, education, and other factors. MRNY offers a generous benefit package including health insurance and 401K

MRNY is a multi-service organization.  Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above -- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services: We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish-language literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation, and in-school and after-school youth programs. We have a robust legal program that offers direct representation across a spectrum of practice areas, including employment law, immigration law, housing and benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights; we also take on impact litigation as a strategy for achieving broad change. Our health program offers facilitated enrollment into health insurance programs and SNAP benefits, a community health worker home visit program, nutrition education and emergency food pantries, health care navigation, and more.
