The Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps (SRCC) is a non-profit organization established in 1984 by the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. The mission of the SRCC is to enrich the lives of young adults by providing a development program integrating education, job skills training in work experience on conservation projects and other services that benefit the communities and the corpsmembers.
The SRCC is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of community leaders from both the government and private business sectors representing the diversity of the community and a broad spectrum of professional backgrounds.
The SRCC Corpsmembers (participants in the combined paid work and education program) and Cadets (participants in the full day education only Academy) between the ages of 18 and 25 years are representatives of our diverse community and most are economically, educationally, and socially challenged and some have a past or present relationship with the justice system.
The SRCC is funded by a variety of federal, state and local government agencies, foundations, corporate grants and sponsorships and private individual donations. As a paid work experience training program, the SRCC relies on funding partners that will support crews of corpsmembers to perform important work for the community while the corpsmembers are learning the work ethic and basic and important job skills training that coupled with the rigorous academic education program will prepare them for their next progressive employment opportunity.
The SRCC academic education and career development program is a required component of the total SRCC program for all corpsmembers. A significant majority of the SRCC participants do not have a high school diploma or equivalency certificate. To provide the academic component of the SRCC program the Corps partners with the John Muir Charter School (JMCS) (a state-wide public school designed for conservation corpsand other similar programs serving those who have dropped out of high school and are no longer eligible to attend a traditional public school). The SRCC Campus of the JMCS offers the corpsmembers an opportunity to finish their high school credits and graduate with a high school diploma. This team of educators at the SRCC are an integral part of the SRCC staff team providing education, case management and career development for the corpsmembers.
The SRCC has a strong management team consisting of the Executive Director, Deputy Director/Chief Financial Officer, Director of Corpsmember Development and Education and the Director of Work Training Programs and Operations.
The Executive Director is responsible for leading the SRCC as defined by its vision and mission, while meeting the annual statutory State Certification requirements coupled with strong financial management practices. The Executive Director will serve as a highly visible community spokesperson building external relationships with local, state and federal elected representatives, chambers of commerce, community business leaders and other key community leaders. The Executive Director must also be an adaptive, visionary, entrepreneurial leader to the staff of the SRCC. The Executive Director reports to and must maintain a strong relationship to the SRCC Board of Directors.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Management: Work with the management team and board of directors to establish program goals, objectives and policies that provide structure and expectations, including rules and consequences which are fundamental to ensuring the development and implementation of a rigorous Corps Work Training, Education and Career Development Program
Ensure an effective and cohesive management system to achieve the program goals setting the tone and direction for the Corps. Oversee the recruitment, interviewing process and selection of management staff. Actively engage with associations and major partners including but not limited to, The Corps Network, California Association of Local Conservation Corps, in particular its legislative work, John Muir Charter School and the California Conservation Corps.
Outreach and External Liaison: Establish linkages and ensures the collaboration with a broad range of individuals and organizations including funding sources, work sponsors, educational institutions, community-based organizations, referring agencies, county and city officials, support services providers and future corpsmember employers. Maintain relations with the youth corps and service organizations around the country. Represent the corps to the community and media. Attend community events.
Business Development, Budget Planning and Fundraising:
Responsible for identifying and securing funding from a variety of public and private sources. Ensure contract and grant compliance. Oversee the development and monitoring of each contract or grant budget, as well as the overall agency budget and overall fiscal management, including cash flow and human resources. Provide detailed business plans for proposed new projects including the project budget, program goals and corpsmember benefits and the integration into the overall Corps program and budget.
External Accountability and Public Relations: Keeps funding sources, the press, community organizations and the general public informed on the corps’ achievements and progress in meeting the needs of the community’s young adults and the community work accomplished.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven experience in Business Development, fundraising and contract negotiations.
- Must have strong understanding and experience in working with financial and budget reports and understand the budget implications of any program changes
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership to and management of a complex program and to inspire and motivate staff to achieve the board’s approved goals
- Experience in working with a volunteer board of directors and understanding the importance of frequent goal setting but at least annually
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary to work cooperatively and effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
- Able to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously, respond to short-term requests and complete projects within agreed upon time frames.
- Treat staff with respect and support.
- Communicate with excellent audience-appropriate skills, oral and written, characterized by active listening and respectful two-way communications/interactions.
- Experience with media relations.
- Bachelor’s degree, advanced degree preferred. Business, finance or accounting degree preferred.
- Minimum 10 years senior management experience.
- General computer skills using PC formats Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point.
- Valid California Class C driver’s license, plus validation of driving record and insurability; candidate also must have own auto in operable condition that will be required for use as part of the job.
- Willingness to work longer days, evenings and weekends as may be required by the circumstances of the position.
