The Haas School of Business develops path bending leaders-individuals who redefine how we do business. Berkeley Haas, the second oldest business school in the United States, educates 2,200 students each year in six degree-granting programs, and hundreds more through executive education programs. A team of 300 staff members support these students, faculty and alumni through work in areas that include Admissions, Student Services, Career Management, Administration, Development and Alumni Relations.

The Development and Alumni Relations team at Berkeley Haas engages and cultivates alumni, parents, friends, corporations and foundations to advance the vision and mission of the school, inviting these key constituencies to provide volunteer leadership and make philanthropic investments in support of the school's students, faculty and programs. The Development team of major gift and annual gift officers cultivates prospective donors, both nationally and internationally, to inspire transformational gifts in support of Berkeley Haas and provides staff support for high-level volunteer groups, such as the Berkeley Haas Advisory Board and the Dean's Advisory Circle. With 41,000 living alumni, the Alumni Relations team develops and builds meaningful connections with graduates and students to inspire engagement, involvement, and investment in their alma mater. The team also develops greater awareness for career services, lifelong learning, and networking resources to support the engagement, learning, and connectedness of Berkeley Haas alumni.


The Director of Alumni Engagement & Leadership Development position involves activities associated with reaching, serving, and engaging external constituencies through programs, events, products, and services not primarily related to fundraising. Constituencies include alumni, students, parents, as well as the general public. Director translates constituent needs and priorities into customized programs to create, enhance, and sustain relationships between the campus and its external constituencies.




• Designs, develops, and through subordinate staff, implements and evaluates programs and projects that advocate for the campus and highlight or showcase campus achievements, awards or contributions.


• Designs and structures strategic engagement opportunities for students and alumni to deepen their connection with the school and one another as well as bolster the long-term reputation of Berkeley Haas.


• Envisions, articulates, and implements plans for achieving alumni volunteer management.


• Through and with subordinate staff has responsibility for a volunteer program this includes recruiting and developing volunteer leaders in support of the mission and strategic direction of the school.


• Includes oversight and management of the Berkeley Haas Alumni Council, and class, reunion, or cohort volunteer communities.


• Designs and collaboratively executes substantive programs for volunteer development, growth and retention.


• Identifies, develops, and markets volunteer opportunities to alumni.


• Fosters an effective volunteer environment evaluating and rewarding performance and leading the creation of annual goals and strategic objectives.


• Develops, coordinates and deploys alumni engagement programs serving a diverse constituency; includes logistics and planning.


• Works collaboratively with the Executive Director on strategic planning, program development, volunteer management, staff development and marketing efforts.


• Contributes story ideas, topics and alumni profiles for the alumni magazine Berkeley Haas, and the unit's digital communications, including social media.


• Works closely with the Assistant Dean and Executive Director to recommend alumni leaders to play key roles in philanthropic and stewardship activities.


• Represents the interests of graduating students and alumni at university and Haas School meetings.


• May serve on committees representing Development & Alumni Relations, participating in short- and long-term planning.


• Supervises staff responsible for providing outreach to the campus' external constituencies, including diverse constituencies.


• Selects, trains, leads, directs, and motivates staff, taking corrective action as necessary, particularly in areas of customer service and dealing effectively with external constituencies.


• Manages the performance, evaluation and development of three, full-time employees responsible for engaging and enriching the alumni and student experience.


• Resolves personnel problems; documents and manages conflict.


• Implements university-directed HR policies and guidelines.


• Ensures programs, events and activities effectively advocate for the campus as well as maintain good relations with a broad and diverse external constituency base, including potentially hostile constituents or antagonistic community groups or other special interest groups.


• Identifies, builds and maintains effective relationships with internal and external constituents, including alumni, donors, faculty, admissions and program offices, research centers and institutes, students and volunteers.


• Coordinates alumni involvement in short- and long-term volunteer roles (e.g. speaker, panelist, mentor, judge), working in close partnership with campus fundraisers to engage prospects and donors in engagements initiatives supporting Haas units, student clubs, program offices, faculty, research centers and institutes.


• Identifies goals and priorities for the unit to provide a solid foundation for donor engagement and stewardship opportunities.


• Serves as a liaison to the Alumni Diversity Council, and supports program development for underrepresented minorities (URM).


• Works closely with counterparts at University Development & Alumni Relations (UDAR) and the California Alumni Association (CAA) to fortify collaborations and programming.


• Fosters strategic partnerships with units across campus as well as counterparts at other top business schools.


• Administers budget allocations.


• Provides collaborative budget administration.


• Assesses and determines resource allocation for volunteer programs and events as well as engagement opportunities, on-campus and in-regions including staff travel, with alumni and donors.


Required Qualifications


• Solid knowledge of the campus' and Haas School's vision, goals, objectives, achievements, infrastructure, policies, and programs, preferred


• Knowledge of issues of concern and trends in higher education.


• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of internal and external constituencies, including diverse constituents from historically marginalized communities.


• Solid knowledge of the fundamentals of personnel and budget administration and skill to effectively perform personnel and budget responsibilities.


• Solid knowledge of organizational concepts and principles associated with managing a customer-service based program.


• Solid written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen.


• Organizational, strategic planning and project management/leadership skills, including event planning skills.


• Solid negotiation skills and skills in problem recognition/avoidance/resolution.


• Solid skills to effectively and appropriately represent and advocate for the campus with a variety of diverse publics.


• Strong skills in understanding constituency needs as related to institutional needs and skills in designing solutions or strategies to achieve consensus.


• Leadership/management skills, including skills to lead, direct, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff and volunteers.


• Strategic planning and implementation skills.


• Demonstrated ability to engage and develop diverse constituents.


• Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.




• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience up to $105,000.00.
