The California Bridge Program, a program of the Public Health Institute (PHI), is hiring a Research Associate to support research and evaluation activities to advance solutions to the opioid epidemic.

 

Within this new role, you will be working on a newly launched, fast-paced project with a dedicated team of program staff and clinicians. You will ensure that data is collected accurately and managed efficiently to facilitate collaboration with The California Bridge Program external evaluator and research partners. This position is a unique opportunity to contribute to, and learn from, the work of leading investigators in the field of addiction treatment and to.

 

The California Bridge Program is building the capacity of hospitals and emergency rooms to serve as primary access points for the treatment of substance use disorders. Our goal is to make treatment available, without judgment or access barriers, to anyone who needs it while reducing stigma and promoting recovery. Our current work focuses on changing how 50 hospitals across California respond to patients in opioid withdrawal, with the goal of changing the standard of care across the state and nation. We are part of a broader effort across California to increase access to medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder to reverse the opioid epidemic that has devastated tens of thousands of lives. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

 

Hospital Aggregate Data Collection and Reporting

Outcome: Core program data are collected and reported at all funded sites to comply with state contract requirements and showcase program results.

• Revise data collection tools and reporting instructions, as needed.

• Work with program staff to communicate data collection requirements to sites and provide training.

• Setup data collection system on REDCap platform and create instructions for sites.

• Serve as a liaison with hospital IT staff to set up EMR data extraction.

• Perform data cleaning and verification, follow-up with sites for critical data that are missing or ambiguous.

• Collaborate with external evaluator to:

- Build hospital level database to manage monthly data submissions from multiple sources and add community level variables to contextualize program data and explore community variations

- Conduct data analysis and produce clear summaries of data collected across sites for monthly reporting as required by contract.

- Provide individual reporting to sites on their respective program activities (patient contacts, characteristics, treatments, and outcomes), based on needs and time constraints.

- Use graphics, data visualization, or other novel presentation formats to present program data in meaningful and engaging formats.

- Produce additional data reports, as needed, to showcase program results.

 

Evaluation of Bridge Program

Outcome: The Bridge Program has feedback and data to improve program services.

• Work with Bridge Program Team to identify priorities for program evaluation.

• Gather feedback on trainings and materials through surveys, interviews, observations, focus groups, etc.

• Produce summaries of findings for Program Team.

• Support implementation assessment at participating hospital sites in conjunction with external evaluator.

 

Support for Cohort Study

Outcome: The Bridge Program’s research partners and principal investigators have support with data collection, management, and analysis to support a rigorous, patient-level cohort study across multiple Bridge sites.

• Evaluate options for patient level data collection and management.

• Assist with set up of REDCap systems at participating institutions.

• Oversee data management and verification; identify data collection issues and offer solutions for process improvements.

• Conduct data analysis under direction of principal investigators

• Provide staffing and follow up for research team calls.

• Coordinate with IRB to ensure compliance with required human subject’s protections in all data collection and program evaluation activities.

 

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in biostatistics or related field plus three years’ experience, or Master’s degree in biostatistics or related field and one-year experience.

• Highly proficient in Excel, STATA, SAS or other statistical package

• Experience collecting data in the field, preferably in medical settings

• Familiarity with EMRs, queries and data extraction

• Experience with REDCap or similar data collection platform

• Excellent problem-solving skills; ability to identify and diagnose problems with data collection, coding, management or analysis

• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing about research and analysis

• Strong attention to detail; ability to identify inaccuracies or inconsistencies in large database

• Experience with small scale program evaluation

 

Important Information

• This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position based in Oakland, CA
