POSITION DESCRIPTION

CLCV and CLCVEF are searching for a seasoned, collaborative, and strategic Major Gifts Officer to be part of an engaged, performance-driven, and enthusiastic team. Reporting to the Director of Philanthropy, the mid-level position of Major Gifts Officer is responsible for the cultivation and stewardship of donors and prospects to make gifts at a leadership level. Responsible for qualifying, soliciting, cultivating, and stewarding individual and small foundation gifts at the 4- to 6-figure level. Our fundraising efforts encompass our 501(c)(4), 501(c)(3) and PAC activities.

This is a remarkable opportunity for the right individual who is committed to the environment and advocacy within the California progressive community. At CLCV, you will have the opportunity to serve a mission you’re passionate about as you contribute to our long-term vision. The position will be based in Northern or Southern California, with an expectation of occasional travel (25%).

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage and develop a portfolio of 150 - 200 current, lapsed and prospective donors, deepening relationships in person, over the phone, and in writing.
  • Meet with donors and prospects across California. It is expected that the Major Gifts Officer will hold at least 100 donor visits annually. Engage donors and prospects at events and other venues as part of the cultivation process.
  • Develop and support research, identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for CLCV’s CEO and other key staff and board members.
  • Plan and execute regular donor cultivation events (minimum of 6 annually), working closely with staff and board members, as well as additional stewardship and cultivation opportunities, such as tele-townhall meetings.
  • Support the planning and execution of CLCV’s annual gala event.
  • Write persuasive and personalized emails, letters, reports and proposals to donors and prospects, including in depth descriptions of our programs and role in environmental advocacy and politics.
  • Participate in high-level planning to help set fundraising, stewardship, and programmatic goals.
  • Design, implement, and grow a planned giving strategy.
  • Work collaboratively with development, communications, and program staff to develop compelling materials and talking points to maximize fundraising results.
  • Ensure donor portfolio records are current with all necessary and pertinent information, and input contacts and actions into donor database in a timely manner. Work with development staff to ensure that pledges are documented, received, and stewarded appropriately.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in fundraising, emphasis in the major donor arena, with a successful track record of closing gifts.
  • Comfortable working independently and as a member of a larger team.
  • Well organized, detail-oriented and have proven experience in securing major gifts.
  • Must be able to prioritize multiple assignments and be able to handle complex tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional verbal communications skills and strong writing skills.
  • Good public speaking skills and the ability to represent CLCV in a variety of settings.
  • Demonstrated strength in relationship cultivation and management.
  • Flexibility with work schedule; this position does require occasional evening and weekend work, as well as travel.
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion as an organizational practice and culture.
  • Experience in environmental advocacy or solicitation of political contributions for federal candidates and/or party committees.
  • Proficiency in Raiser’s Edge or other donor-based software.
  • Knowledge of Planned Giving solicitation strategies and vehicles.
  • Professional and capable of handling confidential information with the utmost discretion.
  • Politically savvy, with a great sense of humor and an eagerness for continued learning.
  • Optimism and a proven interest in politics, passionate about protecting the environment, racial justice and equity, and meaningful social change.
