Psychologist

The Center for Victims of Torture is hiring a Psychologist who will be responsible for providing psychological assessment and treatment to survivors of torture and their family members. Psychotherapy services are provided in a team context. This position will provide individual and group therapy, engage in outreach and training and manage interpreters. Position is based in Clarkston, Georgia.

We are an international nonprofit dedicated to healing survivors of torture. We offer rehabilitation services to those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture, and advocate for human rights and an end to torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota, and we have US offices in Atlanta and DC, as well as offices in Africa and the Middle East.

Responsibilities:

• Psychotherapy: Conduct initial eligibility determination interviews for acceptance into a specialized torture treatment program, providing outside referrals and crisis assessment & intervention when necessary.  Clientele consists of refugees and asylum seekers. Conduct diagnostic interviews and diagnose psychiatric disorders. Conduct individual psychotherapy sessions at a frequency determined with client. Conduct group therapy sessions. For clients with political asylum claims, occasionally attend asylum interviews and/or hearings in order to provide expert testimony and/or support the clients as appropriate. A significant amount of care coordination with other providers is incorporated into the therapeutic process due to clients’ high needs.

• Documentation & Interdisciplinary Team Collaboration: Complete clinical documentation including session chart notes, psychological assessment reports, treatment plans, closing treatment summaries.  Complete databases and assessment measures on clients.  Prepare treatment plans and other necessary documentation for clinic records and third-party reimbursement needs. Offer written and oral expert testimony related to the psychological effects of torture when necessary.

Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team context.  Provide input to team members regarding client’s psychological progress and seek input from others about related treatment needs. Participate on the Information & Referral team. Participate in formal and informal case consultation meetings and collaborative meetings with External Relations.

• Interpreter Management: Oversee the interpreter program, including hiring (in collaboration with Headquarters HR staff), training and supervising interpreters. Provide support and training to interpreters. Address vicarious trauma issues as well as challenges with interpreter role. Train and coach staff members on working with interpreters.  Organize yearly interpreter trainings, provide feedback, and serve as liaison between interpreters and staff.  Maintain appropriate records.

• Outreach and Training: Together, with other clinical team members, conduct and participate in outreach and training activities focused on increasing awareness of torture treatment and capacity building for the community and various service organizations. Trainings typically occur in a large group format. Collaborate with community organizations, including health, educational, employment and social service providers. Outreach and training are sometimes conducted in collaboration with External Relations staff.

Qualifications:

Preferred education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

• PhD or PsyD in Psychology or other related field

• Licensed Psychologist in the state of Georgia (or have application for LP pending with the Georgia Board of Examiners)

• At least three years of experience providing psychological services, including treatment of survivors of trauma (at least two years of experience providing psych services is required)

• Experience working professionally with refugees, asylum seekers or immigrants

• Experience providing psychological services via an interpreter

• Experience supervising volunteers, interpreters or staff members

Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

• PhD or PsyD in Psychology or other related field

• Licensed Psychologist in the state of Georgia (or have application for LP pending with the Georgia Board of Examiners)

• At least two years of experience providing psychological services, including treatment of survivors of trauma 

• Experience working professionally with refugees, asylum seekers or immigrants

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

• Knowledge of evidence-based and relationship-based therapy models.

• Formal training and experience in clinical mental health assessment, including the use of measures in practice and/or research.

• Demonstrated ability to work cross-culturally

• Ability to maintain confidentiality, recognize appropriate boundaries and cope with emotionally stressful situations

• Ability to work independently, think critically and problem-solve appropriately

• Ability to complete documentation in a high-quality and timely manner

• Ability to design, create and deliver presentations for different audiences (including comfort with public speaking)

• Open to feedback and willing to learn

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word and Excel)

• Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills

• Excellent skills in organization, attention to detail and time management (including the ability to meet deadlines)

• Interest in or commitment to human rights

Hiring Range: $68,000-$77,000 annually, dependent on qualifications
