JOB OVERVIEW
The Data Manager will provide data management and analytic support for a study to compare the effectiveness of two different models of enhanced prenatal care available to low-income (Medicaid-eligible) women in Fresno County: “Glow! Group Prenatal Care and Support” (Glow!/GC) and the California Department of Public Health’s Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program with individual prenatal care (CPSP/IC).

The study will be carried out in partnership between the California Preterm Birth Initiative at UCSF and the Central Valley Health Policy Institute at California State University, Fresno. Specifically, we will compare preterm birth rates, changes in depressive and anxiety symptom severity, and perception of respectful care and satisfaction with prenatal care.

Clinical practices primarily serving low-income, racially / ethnically diverse patients will be randomly assigned to one of two recruitment tracks which will alternate between recruitment for Glow!/GC and recruitment for CPSP/IC. Led by the Principal Investigator (PI), this position is part of a multidisciplinary research team that oversees all data management and analyses. The California State University Fresno team will be responsible for patient recruitment and data collection activities in Fresno.

The Data Manager also will participate in analyzing data for the PRiOr CEsarEan Decision App (PROCEED) Study. This is a multicenter study in which 1500 pregnant women who have had one prior cesarean delivery were randomized to a patient-centered decision tool or no intervention; the primary outcome is approach to delivery (trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) or elective repeat cesarean delivery (ERCD)). Secondary participant-reported outcomes include knowledge about TOLAC and ERCD and their potential outcomes, decisional conflict, shared decision making regarding delivery approach, decision self-efficacy and decision satisfaction. Delivery type (vaginal or cesarean) and maternal and neonatal morbidities also will be compared.

Data collection for that study will end in June 2019; the Data Manager will conduct secondary analyses of that data under the direction of the PI and a staff statistician and a faculty biostatistician.

This position requires an employee with excellent communication and organizational skills. Job responsibilities will include developing data collection instruments and protocols, creating study databases, training study personnel, managing data collection from collaborating sites, creating automated error checking systems and data reports for review by study personnel and investigators, and coordinating error resolution. S/he will extract and clean datasets; execute basic and advanced statistical analysis with guidance from the PI and study co-investigators; prepare summary reports, charts, tables, and figures; and contribute to publications and presentations. S/he may also assist with data analysis for other research studies led by the PI.

CALIFORNIA PRETERM BIRTH INITIATIVE
The California Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBi-CA) is a transdisciplinary, health equity-focused research effort aimed at preventing and reducing disparities in preterm birth and improving the health outcomes of babies born preterm (and their families). PTBi-CA asserts that structural and interpersonal racism along with other key social determinants are an important driver of an epidemic that disproportionately affects women of color in California and nationally. Accordingly, PTBi-CA pursues research through a precision health lens, recognizing that birth outcomes are highly influenced by a complex interplay of biological and social determinants that vary by population and place. PTBi-CA is committed to building authentic partnerships with academic and community stakeholders in Fresno, Oakland and San Francisco to prioritize research questions, review and co-develop research proposals, and evaluate their potential for impact.

Through discovery and precision health-focused research efforts, PTBi-CA seeks to better understand the chronic stressors and protective factors that may affect preterm birth and the health outcomes of mothers and their babies. They also seek to identify and test new interventions to prevent preterm birth and improve outcomes for premature infants across the reproductive life course (preconception, prenatal and postnatal strategies).

Through Collective Impact efforts in San Francisco and Fresno, PTBi-CA also seeks to engage health, government, social service, and community stakeholders to advance mutually reinforcing activities that contribute to population level reductions in preterm birth.
