Statement of Job:

The Youth Orchestras Program Associate will be responsible for the administration of the Atlanta Music Project Youth Orchestras.

The AMP Youth Orchestras are the top orchestral ensembles within the organization. Comprised of a Junior Orchestra and Senior Orchestra, these ensembles are open, via audition, to any middle and high school student that plays an instrument of the symphony orchestra. The AMP Youth Orchestras rehearse twice per week and perform at least ten concerts annually. Regional, national and international tours are planned for the future. Through a combination of standard symphonic literature and unique repertoire representing the culture of AMP communities, it is AMP’s goal to have its Youth Orchestras program to become the most unique and sought-after in the country.

The Youth Orchestras Program Associate position requires a unique combination of skills, including an understanding of pre-conservatory training, the ability to communicate with multiple constituencies and knowledge of music performance and education, and youth development.

The successful candidate will possess an unyielding commitment to empowering youth to realize their possibilities through music. This position reports to the Atlanta Music Project’s Chief Programming Officer and works closely with orchestral and choral program staff.

About the Atlanta Music Project

Founded in 2010, the Atlanta Music Project provides intensive, tuition-free music education for underserved youth right in their neighborhood. AMP’s mission is to empower underserved youth to realize their possibilities through music. In addition to four after-school learning sites providing band, orchestra and choir instruction, AMP’s programs include: the AMP Academy, providing advanced musical training to AMP’s most talented and dedicated students; the AMP Summer Series, a music festival and school; and the AMP Youth Choirs & Orchestras.

AMP music ensembles perform more than 50 concerts annually, performing in venues all across Atlanta, from community centers to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. AMP music ensembles have performed alongside international stars such as the Harlem Quartet, electric violinist Lindsey Stirling, pianist Terrence Wilson, soprano Alison Buchanan, rapper Lecrae, R&B singer Monica, and the Imani Winds. AMP musicians can be seen performing with rapper T.I. on NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series. AMP’s young musicians have successfully auditioned for Georgia All-State ensembles, the Atlanta Opera, and have concertized as far away as Los Angeles, Aspen and Mexico City. AMP is a 2019 winner of ArtsATL’s Luminary Award for Arts Education and a 2018 winner of Emory University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award. In 2016 and 2017, the White House named AMP one of the top 50 after-school arts programs in the nation.

AMP’s existence is a direct result of the 2009 TED Prize, which was awarded to Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu, founder of Venezuela’s El Sistema. AMP’s co-founders were members of the Sistema Fellows Program at the New England Conservatory in Boston.

The 2019-2020 school year will be a milestone year for AMP as it celebrates its tenth year of programming. This will also be AMP’s first full year in its first ever headquarters space, the AMP Center for Performance and Education. With a 2019-2020 annual operating budget projected at just over $1MM, AMP will serve 350 young musicians.

AMP’s current and past funders include Carnegie Hall, PwC, Bank of America, the Chick-fil-A Foundation, the Coca-Cola Foundation, MailChimp, The Zeist Foundation, the Abraham J. & Phyllis Katz Foundation, the Harland Charitable Foundation, the Arthur M. Blank Foundation, Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, Fulton County Arts Council, Georgia Council for the Arts, Georgia Music Foundation and the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta.

AMP’s partners and collaborators include the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation, The Kindezi Schools, the Woodruff Arts Center, Atlanta Public Schools and Clayton State University and Carnegie Hall.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Understand and represent the AMP philosophies for uplifting youths, families and communities through the pursuit of musical excellence
  • Work towards developing the AMP Youth Orchestras into a top-class orchestral training program
  • Support the AMP Youth Orchestras conductors and sectional coaches
  • Monitor AMP Youth Orchestra Pay Sheets for submission to AMP administration
  • Oversee the AMP Youth Orchestra rehearsal and performance schedule
  • Oversee the AMP Youth Orchestra auditions
  • Enforce the AMP Attendance Policy and track AMP students’ attendance
  • Act as the main liaison between AMP and AMP Orchestra parents/families
  • Prepare and lead AMP parent meetings
  • Oversee field trips, including permission forms, transportation, parent chaperones
  • Oversee recruitment and advertising process
  • Oversee the registration process and maintain student files
  • In collaboration with Operations department, manage, purchase and inventory class materials, instruments and concert uniforms
  • Act as the main liaison between AMP and performance venues
  • Seek innovative partnerships with community institutions, artists, corporations, school districts etc.
  • Develop opportunities for regional, national and international touring
  • Participate in the administration of the AMP Summer Series
  • Attend peer exchange and professional development workshops
  • Execute additional administrative tasks as necessary

Minimum Requirements:Bachelor’s Degree in Music in any string, woodwind or brass instrument; performance degree a plus

  • At least 1 year of experience working in non-profit, music performance, music education and/or youth development
  • Strong understanding of what is required to develop young musicians of the highest caliber
  • Experience teaching private lessons and/or managing a private studio
  • Strong knowledge of music education principles
  • Strong performing ability as a classical musician
  • Excellent command of Google Docs, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint
  • Public speaking experience
  • Dependable, with excellent follow-through on tasks and responsibilities

In addition, the ideal candidate will possess:

  • A degree from a major music conservatory, college music program
  • Desire to work with disadvantaged, urban/rural communities
  • Passion for music as a vehicle for positive social change
  • Strong understanding of elite youth music programs
  • Experience teaching or coaching music in the public schools
  • Experience interacting with the families of private lesson students
  • Ability to inspire, work with and mentor children and teens

Notes: The Youth Orchestras Program Associate is a full-time, salaried position starting in August of 2019. Compensation commensurate with experience. Generous vacation schedule. Laptop provided. Successful candidate must be available as needed on evenings and weekends. Some travel for work necessary. Must have driver’s license and regular access to a car. Background check required. AMP provides all its students with an instrument, a teaching artist, classes and numerous public performance opportunities. AMP does not hold entrance auditions – the only requirement is a commitment to attending all classes.

AMP’s programs include: the AMP Orchestra; AMPlify, the choral program of the Atlanta Music Project; the AMP Academy, which provides advanced musical training to AMP’s most talented and dedicated students; and the AMP Summer Series, a music festival and school.

In September of 2017, AMP students will perform the national anthem at Mercedes-Benz Stadium at an Atlanta United FC game. AMP’s young artists have performed at Atlanta’s most prestigious venues, including the Woodruff Arts Center, Spivey Hall, Center Stage, and the Rialto Center for the Arts. In 2015 Clayton State University established the Atlanta Music Project Endowed Scholarships, providing college scholarship funds for AMP students.

In both 2016 and 2017 the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities named AMP one of the top 50 youth programs in the nation. AMP is the recipient of the prestigious 2016 Bank of America Neighborhood Builders award, which will support the development of AMP’s first ever headquarters space in Southwest Atlanta. AMP is a member of “El Sistema USA,” the National Alliance of El Sistema Inspired Programs.
