AMP Academy Program Associate

Statement of Job

The AMP Academy Program Associate will be responsible for the administration of the Atlanta Music Project Academy. The AMP Academy provides advanced musical instruction to AMP’s 75 most talented and dedicated students. AMP Academy students (orchestral and vocal) are selected via audition and must perform solo recitals, masterclasses and annual adjudications. In addition, AMP Academy students regularly audition for All-State, national summer programs and college programs.

The position of AMP Academy Program Associate requires a unique combination of skills, including an understanding of pre-conservatory training, the ability to communicate with multiple constituencies and knowledge of music performance and education, and youth development.

The successful candidate will possess an unyielding commitment to empowering youth to realize their possibilities through music. This position reports to the Atlanta Music Project’s Chief Programming Officer and works closely with orchestral and choral program staff.

About the Atlanta Music Project

Founded in 2010, the Atlanta Music Project provides intensive, tuition-free music education for underserved youth right in their neighborhood. AMP’s mission is to empower underserved youth to realize their possibilities through music. In addition to four after-school learning sites providing band, orchestra and choir instruction, AMP’s programs include: the AMP Academy, providing advanced musical training to AMP’s most talented and dedicated students; the AMP Summer Series, a music festival and school; and the AMP Youth Choirs & Orchestras.

AMP music ensembles perform more than 50 concerts annually, performing in venues all across Atlanta, from community centers to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. AMP music ensembles have performed alongside international stars such as the Harlem Quartet, electric violinist Lindsey Stirling, pianist Terrence Wilson, soprano Alison Buchanan, rapper Lecrae, R&B singer Monica, and the Imani Winds. AMP musicians can be seen performing with rapper T.I. on NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series. AMP’s young musicians have successfully auditioned for Georgia All-State ensembles, the Atlanta Opera, and have concertized as far away as Los Angeles, Aspen and Mexico City. AMP is a 2019 winner of ArtsATL’s Luminary Award for Arts Education and a 2018 winner of Emory University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award. In 2016 and 2017, the White House named AMP one of the top 50 after-school arts programs in the nation.

AMP’s existence is a direct result of the 2009 TED Prize, which was awarded to Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu, founder of Venezuela’s El Sistema. AMP’s co-founders were members of the Sistema Fellows Program at the New England Conservatory in Boston.

The 2019-2020 school year will be a milestone year for AMP as it celebrates its tenth year of programming. This will also be AMP’s first full year in its first ever headquarters space, the AMP Center for Performance and Education. With a 2019-2020 annual operating budget projected at just over $1MM, AMP will serve 350 young musicians.

Position Responsibilities

• Understand and represent the AMP philosophies for uplifting youths, families and communities through the pursuit of musical excellence
• Oversee and support AMP Academy students’ preparation and applications or All-State auditions and summer music program applications
• Develop and maintain cloud-based systems to track private lesson progress
• Develop and maintain cloud-based systems to store all AMP Academy student records
• Monitor AMP Academy Pay Sheets for submission to AMP administration
• Support AMP Academy teaching artists as necessary
• Support AMP Academy teaching artists in selecting appropriate repertoire for their students
• Purchase and distribute AMP Academy class materials, sheet music, method books etc.
• Present the AMP Academy to AMP families at formal meetings
• Conduct bi-annual meetings with AMP Academy families and students
• Oversee the hiring, scheduling and sheet music preparation for all AMP Academy accompanists
• Disseminate all relevant AMP Academy information to teaching artists, students and families in a timely fashion, via multiple formats
• In collaboration with Chief Programming Officer and other program staff, organize and produce all AMP Academy recitals
• In collaboration with Chief Programming Officer and other program staff, organize and produce AMP Academy masterclasses with world-renowned guest musicians
• Participate in the administration of the AMP Summer Series
• Meet with AMP senior staff as needed
• Make recommendations to maximize student outcomes
• Development strategies to enhance both the student experience and the prestige of the AMP Academy
• Execute other administrative tasks as needed

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Music in any string, woodwind or brass instrument; performance degree a plus
• At least 1 year of experience working in non-profit, music performance, music education and/or youth development
• Experience teaching private lessons and/or managing a private studio
• Strong knowledge of music education principles
• Strong performing ability as a classical musician
• Excellent command of Google Docs, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint
• Public speaking experience
• Dependable, with excellent follow-through on tasks and responsibilities

In addition, the ideal candidate will possess:

• A degree from a major music conservatory, college music program
• Desire to work within disadvantaged, urban communities
• Experience with music auditions and competitions
• Passion for music as a vehicle for positive social change
• Strong understanding of elite youth music programs
• Experience teaching or coaching music in the public schools
• Experience interacting with the families of private lesson students
• Ability to inspire, work with and mentor children and teens
• Excellent leadership ability, inter-personal skills and be comfortable working in a team
• Ability to adapt, be flexible and have a sense of humor
• Impeccable time-management skills
• Ability to work without much guidance; self-starter
• Entrepreneurial spirit
• Strong Organizational skills

Notes: The AMP Academy Program Associate is a full-time, salaried position starting in August of 2019. Compensation commensurate with experience. Generous vacation schedule. Laptop provided. Successful candidate must be available as needed on evenings and weekends. Some travel for work necessary. Must have driver’s license and regular access to a car. Background check required.
