Job Details

The Director of East County Services is a new position for Cancer Support Community.  This position will be responsible for developing and managing CSC’s new services for underserved people in East Contra Costa County.

Cancer Support Community is the premier provider of psychosocial care in Northern California, and has one of the largest and most successful centers in North America.  CSC’s center has been located in Walnut Creek since 1990, and now serves over 2,000 people each year.  We also provide some services in other community locations, currently including Antioch, Castro Valley, San Pablo, San Ramon and Vallejo.

We are honored that the Charlotte Maxwell Clinic, based in Oakland since 1993, will join us in providing critical services at CSC East Contra Costa.  CMC is the primary provider of integrative therapies for low-income women with cancer in the Bay Area, and has long been recognized as a national leader in comprehensive cancer care.

CSC’s initial curriculum of programs and services in East County will include:

•  Community navigation and case management

•  Congregate meals and nutrition education

•  Financial counseling and emergency financial assistance

•  Specialized exercise and mind-body programs, such as yoga, tai chi, mindfulness and guided imagery

•  Educational programs on managing treatment, recovery and survivorship

•  (By CMC) Integrative therapies including acupuncture, homeopathy, Chinese and Western herbal medicine, therapeutic massage, reiki and bodywork

In the future, as our East County programs and members grow, we plan to include additional psychosocial support, including:

•  Individual and family counseling for those in crisis, and decisional counseling for those with complex or difficult treatment decisions

•  Therapist-led support groups for people with cancer and for their caregivers

The Director will initially be the primary CSC staff member based in East Contra Costa.  This position will establish the satellite center, coordinate and supervise the work of contract instructors and volunteers, and facilitate the collaboration with CMC and any other partners.

The Director will develop and steward relationships between CSC, the medical community and the larger East Contra Costa community.  The Director will also create awareness and understanding of our programs and facilitate participation by cancer patients and their loved ones, with an emphasis on engaging those experiencing health inequities.

The Director reports directly to the Chief Mission Officer.  This is a full-time, exempt position.  Compensation for the position will be competitive (for a small nonprofit organization), depending on qualifications and experience, and will include generous paid time off and employer contribution to health benefits and a 401(k) plan.

Duties:

•  Develop and maintain relationships with key community partners, including hospital personnel, medical professionals, oncology groups, churches and community partners

•  Supervise outreach and engagement with the medical community and patients/survivors/caregivers

•  Provide community navigation and case management services for cancer patients/survivors

•  Develop a curriculum of programs and services for CSC’s East County location, including at the outset mind-body programs, emergency financial assistance, and patient and survivor education programs

•  Supervise management of facilities and materials, and supervise and support instructors and volunteers for CSC East County

•  Recruit and coordinate community groups to prepare and serve congregate meals at CSC East County, and ultimately also at CSC in Walnut Creek

•  Provide analysis and reports of mission delivery as needed

•  Other duties as assigned by the CMO

Qualifications:

•  A passion for the mission of Cancer Support Community

•  Familiarity with the East Contra Costa County community

•  Experience working with underserved, low income populations

•  Experience delivering services in a mental health, healthcare or therapeutic mission organization

•  Ability to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends

•  Excellent analytical, problem-solving and oral and written communication skills

•  LCSW, MSW or LMFT preferred

•  Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
