Jewish Family & Career Services of Atlanta (JF&CS) provides health, career and human services to support and enhance the well-being of individuals and families across all ages, faiths, cultures and lifestyles. Its more than 30 programs serve a variety of populations, including children, teens, parents and older adults. JF&CS is now seeking a Vocational and Life Skills Specialist.

Purpose: Provides vocational and life skills learning experiences for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through program and curriculum development, implementation, and oversight. The Vocational and Life Skills Specialist will coordinate all aspects of IndependenceWORKS vocational and life skills programming to provide differentiated learning experiences for participants including development of differentiated curricula, collecting relevant data, and documentation on individual progress. The Vocational and Life Skills Specialist will establish and maintain a positive working relationships with families, and build contacts and relationships with community service providers, and schools. 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and oversee all aspects of life skills and vocational instruction and support for clients of the division
  • Develop daily and weekly schedule of curriculum-based, differentiated activities for participants
  • Participate in hiring, orienting, and ensuring ongoing training for Team Leads, DSPs, and other program staff on how to effectively implement curriculum-based activities with clients
  • Provide oversight of daily case notes
  • Participate with client intake, orientation, and assessment of specific client needs for day services
  • Participate in client recruitment and marketing efforts to support and build program
  • Work with Support and Administrative Coordinators on ISP documentation and maintaining behavior support plans/behavior modification tools
  • Communicate regularly with program participants and families keeping them updated on their loved one’s progress, to resolve issues, etc. 
  • Regularly communicate with Residential Program Manager and other division staff regarding shared clients
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with families, community service providers and schools.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state and DBHDD policies affecting the program; attend provider meetings; maintain working knowledge of best practices
  • Develop and maintain service contracts with State, private and community funding sources; ensure agency annual Service Agreements are signed by client/guardian and are on file
  • Serve as liaison for volunteer opportunities and programming within IndependenceWORKS
  • Participate in annual goal meetings for all IndependenceWORKS clients
  • Track and monitor program and client cash
  • Provide direct service and support for program participants when needed, including providing transportation, staffing a shift, and other duties as necessary
  • Participate in fundraising, training internal/external partners, and volunteer activities as requested by the Director
  • Ensure facility is well maintained and stocked; promptly report issues to operations manager and facilities/procurement coordinators
  • Maintain partnership with the JCC Transitions program instructing vocational lessons and skills to participants in the JCC Transitions program.
  • Collect and record daily activity data and client progress
  • Organize special projects and activities

Minimum Requirements:

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Management experience an asset
  • Strong ability to prioritize, delegate and multi-task, and to ask for help when needed.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative and to be flexible.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team, accepting constructive criticism and providing feedback as needed.
  • General Knowledge or principles and techniques for placement of persons with disabilities in the competitive labor market,
  • Knowledge of the American's with Disabilities Act and considerable skill in public speaking and networking with professional in various fields of private industry and governmental agencies.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in social services or related field and 5 years’ experience
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities
  • Experience in day/vocational services
  • At least 5 years in management/supervising staff
