Position Description:

 

Ideal Candidate Statement:

 

The ideal candidate will have the interpersonal skills and experience working with various employees – administrative assistants, instructional aids, staff, administrators, and faculty. The ideal candidate will have a customer-service approach while balancing the act of empowering others by conducting workshops and trainings effectively. The person will also possess technical skills using various tools and techniques to ensure electronic or information and communications technology accessibility on various platforms.

 

Job Description Summary:

 

Under the general direction of the area vice president, provide expertise in universal design applications and assist district employees with ensuring that documents and other information and communications technologies (ICT ) are accessible using universal design techniques. Assess and fix electronic documents (PDF , Word, Excel, Power Point and other software applications) for Section 508/WCAG 2.0 standards compliance;

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

• Office productivity suites – Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe Acrobat

• Web technologies

• Microsoft Windows OS and Mac OS

• Assistive technologies (JAWS , VoiceOver, Dragon NaturallySpeaking)

• The latest WCAG standards, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA ), and Section 504 and 508© of the American Rehabilitation Act

• Learning Management Systems such as Instructure Canvas, Blackboard, and Desire to Learn (D2L)

• Audit tools for evaluating accessibility on documents, websites, and other electronic media.

• Current regulations on information and communications technology accessibility.

• HTML semantics/tagging, Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA ), hyperlink integrity, and remediation of Section 508 accessibility issues.

 

ABILITY TO:

• Serve as a technical resource for ICT accessibility to faculty and staff

• Provide services at both Fremont campus and Newark Center.

Essential Duties:

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

 

• Train employees on making documents and other media that comply with Website Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0 AA)

• Perform live trainings for employees on universal design.

• Perform periodic accessibility audits of institutional websites and web applications.

• Perform complete audits and validation testing on software and documents, based upon Section 508 and/or W3C WCAG 2.1 accessibility guidelines.

• Maintain current – knowledge of emerging trends related to accessibility of information and communications technology.

• Recommend a standard tool for checking for accessibility on both the Windows and Mac platforms.

• Work in collaboration with Information Technology Services, Student Accessibility Services, Distance Education, and other related departments to plan, coordinate and educate the college community about the importance of universal design.

• Identify and recommend areas where existing policies and procedures require change, or where new ones need to be developed, especially as it relates to information and communications technology accessibility.

• Participates in conferences and activities related to technology and accessibility.

• Write detailed findings to document identified issues and recommend potential solutions and best practices for remediation of accessibility violations.

• Work with third-party service providers, vendors, and serve as a liaison for information and communications technology accessibility services.

• Monitor and advise on new or changing laws and technical standards related to technology accessibility.

• Prepare and conduct training on accessibility related topics.

• Assist in making complex documents accessible and recommend solutions for future reference.

• Develop training materials and guides – to make various documents accessible such as manuals, training videos, and quick tips.

• Inspect documents manually to ensure the accuracy of automatic accessible checkers.

 

OTHER DUTIES :

Perform related duties as assigned.

 

Education and Experience:

 

Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor’s in computer science, information technology, or related field preferred; associate’s degree in –Informational Technology or related field and at least one year of experience working on information and communications technology accessibility.

Familiarity with Federal Government accessibility testing is preferred.
