Are you driven to create racial and economic justice?  Are you smart, creative and adept at building relationships?  If so, this may be the role for you!  Located in Concord, CA, Monument Impact (MI) seeks a full-time, bilingual (Spanish/English), experienced Community Organizing Manager to lead our programs and campaigns that engage Monument residents in some of the most urgent issues of our times. This is a unique opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of our predominately low-income, immigrant community and to be part of a movement for equity in Contra Costa County.

This position will support two staff organizers and engage the community by developing their leadership to build community power and advocate for equitable policies and programs that improve the well-being of our low-income residents.

About Monument Impact

Since 2001, Monument Impact has worked with the Monument community of Concord to address immigrants’ barriers to economic advancement.  Our mission is to ensure that immigrants, refugees and low-income residents in Concord and surrounding communities have the voice, tools and relationships for an equitable share of the social and economic wealth in our region. To meet our mission, we integrate our direct services in workforce development, healthy community, immigration services, and more with community engagement and organizing.

About the Position

The Community Organizing Manager will drive an ambitious program of building local leadership and seeking policy change at the local, regional and state levels. Currently, we are working on immigrant rights and tenant protections with an overarching goal to build a more inclusive, equitable Concord. We are advocating for tenant protections, developing more affordable housing, and preserving existing affordable housing for very low-income residents.

The Community Organizing Manager will invest deeply in a team of talented staff and promotores, working with them to align issue campaigns, policy, power building, and leadership training in our immigrant and refugee community. This position reports to the Program Director and works in close partnership with the Executive Director. Two staff organizers report to the Lead Community Organizer.

Job Responsibilities

  • Drive, drive, drive. Own the project of aligning issues, policy work, civic engagement, narrative and communications, and building power with our core service programs designed to grow economic opportunity and promote healthy community. Work in coalition and develop partnerships to drive the organization forward to building local leadership and power to win.
  • Invest in staff and local leaders. Demonstrate how a team approach – with a sharp vision and clear responsibilities – will build our base and amplify community voices. Build the leadership of staff and promotores to help develop and manage campaign strategies.
  • Invest in cutting edge leadership development. Expand leadership and organizing training for local residents to be proactive architects of the future of our community.  Ensure the community’s interests are actively represented in advocacy efforts. Build and energize our base for campaigns like securing tenant protections and equitable development that meets the needs of our underserved community. Support leaders in creating razor-sharp campaigns. Identify and support leaders interested in developing their capacity to sit on local commissions or run for office.
  • Build independent political power. Together with our coalitions and allies, grow our base. Identify local elected leaders who are responsive to the priorities of immigrants, refugees and other low-income community members. Build relationships with partner organizations to develop a diverse network of local leaders.
  • Make no small plans. But do make well-written ones in partnership with your team and organizational leadership. Ensure plans and supporting documents project our work out 12 to 18 months in advance. The staff and, when appropriate, our coalition partners, should really co-create and own these plans. Report on deliverables outlined in these plans to our funders.
  • Assist in setting strategy and goals. Work closely with the Executive Director, Program Director, Board and senior staff to develop and articulate overall community engagement strategy, goals, and plans.
  • Look to the long-term. Push every project or campaign to address not just the short-term gains but how they interact to accomplish longer term goals, including those on the state level.
  • Manage effectively. Help ensure the right people are in the right roles and that there is role clarity at all levels; ensure adequate communication and coordination across the organization to integrate community engagement with MI’s service programs; build and model performance-oriented culture.
  • Manage up effectively. Accurately determine what issues the Executive and Program Directors need to help address.
  • Be a public leader. Manage external ally and, as needed, donor relationships. Represent the organization with a variety of audiences.
  • Build deep trust. Invest in relationships with staff in order to deeply understand their self-interest, including in-person time.
  • Be inclusive. Recognize and appreciate different ways of working and being.
  • Model our values and culture. Model optimism and initiative inside and outside the organization, and reinforce our core values and culture. Model transparent and accountable decision-making.
  • Integrate new ideas and work. Take the hand off of ideas, deals, relationships, and new areas of work from the Executive and Program Directors and move them through the implementation stage with appropriate staffing and adjustments to roles.
  • Be an innovator and prospector. Listen to the community and cast around for the next critical issue impacting our community, power building plan, etc.

Experience

The ideal candidate should have the following experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree required
  • Commitment to racial, gender and economic justice and their intersections and bottom-up social change
  • A minimum of 4 years’ experience working with community, labor, or electoral organizations where you had success in base building and developing and winning campaigns. Similar level of experience supervising staff, with a strong track record of building teams and developing staff leadership.
  • Ideal candidate will have experience managing programs and program budgets.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is required with excellent communication skills, written and verbal, in both English and Spanish
  • Proven success working in an underserved, multi-cultural environment and ability to build strong working relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders
  • Ability to guide, direct, and support others to advocate for equity and inclusion
  • Demonstrated ability to track program and campaign outcomes and data
  • Computer proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint; experience with Salesforce or another database program is a plus
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational communication skills
