The Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc., (Legal Aid) seeks a full-time Kinship Care Attorney to work for its Kinship Care Project. The Kinship Care Project is a part of the Fulton Domestic Relations Unit and includes a managing attorney, 2 staff attorneys (one part-time), and 1 paralegal.

The goal of the Kinship Care Project is to provide representation to relative caregivers in custody, guardianship, adoption, estate planning and other related legal matters. The unit uses a variety of methods to provide assistance, including community education and outreach, brief service, advice and referral, negotiation, mediation and litigation. The attorneys in the unit handle a mixed caseload, and may practice in Juvenile, Probate and Superior Courts in the metro-Atlanta area. Attorneys are encouraged to participate in local bar associations and social service organizations, and to provide support to various client organizations. They may also assist the Domestic Relations Unit as needed, including helping staff the Fulton Superior Court Family Law Information Center or assist with Family Law clinics.

The Project Attorney will be expected to be an active part of the Unit, fully participating in all of the above activities, and other tasks as needed. The Attorney may develop special expertise in a particular legal area pertinent to the practice of the Project.

Qualifications: Qualified candidates must have a juris doctor degree from an accredited law school, with 3 years of relevant legal experience preferred. Compassion and patience, excellent communication and listening skills, ability to work in a team or alone, adaptability, excellent legal writing skills, a solid work ethic and an appreciation for diversity and inclusion are required. We also require a Georgia bar license or eligibility for the next exam. Demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics, pro bono projects, familiarity with areas of poverty law, and previous work with low-income persons is strongly preferred.

Salary and benefits: This grant-funded position is for 1 year, with the possibility of continuation dependent on funding. The salary is commensurate with experience. Starting salary for an attorney in his or her fourth year of practice is $54,600. The program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, vacation, sick, and paid parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a 403(b) retirement plan with a program match; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; and educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 deductible); some CLE expenses; and Georgia Bar dues.

Application Requirements: Include a resume; a letter explaining your interest in the position; legal writing samples which demonstrate your ability to research and analyze legal issues; the names, phone numbers, and if available, e-mail addresses of three legal references who have direct knowledge of your legal work; and an official law school transcript.
