The Atlanta Legal Aid Society, a 75-lawyer non-profit law firm for low-income persons with
civil legal problems in the 5-county metropolitan Atlanta area, seeks a staff attorney to work in its
Health Law Unit. The unit began in 1990 as the AIDS Legal Project and expanded to work with
persons with cancer, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), and other life threatening illnesses. The Health Law
Unit is staffed by a managing attorney, two staff attorneys, a paralegal, and an outreach paralegal; the
unit is housed in the downtown offices of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society.
Attorneys represent clients in a variety of matters related to their health, including end of life
planning, public benefits, health insurance, housing loss, poor housing conditions, domestic violence,
employment, and access to appropriate support services. Knowledge of health, insurance, employment
law, and a commitment to, or experience with, helping persons living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, or other
life threatening diseases is helpful, but not required. In addition to legal representation of clients, staff
members perform regular outreach and community education for clients and medical/social service
staff. Access to a car or other transportation is necessary to perform community outreach duties.
Qualifications: Qualified candidates must possess excellent legal writing, oral advocacy, and
work ethic. Communication and listening skills, ability to work on a team and alone, adaptability, and
appreciation of diversity are required. A Georgia bar license or eligibility for the next exam is
required. Demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics, trial
advocacy courses, familiarity with areas of poverty law, and previous work with low-income persons
are strongly preferred.
Terms: The salary for a licensed attorney is $50,000+, depending upon legal experience. The
program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, vacation, sick, and paid parental
leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health
insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement
up to $600 per month (after a $65 deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); CLE
expenses; and Georgia Bar dues.
To apply: A complete application packet must include a letter of application, résumé, recent
writing sample demonstrating your ability to perform legal research and analyze a fact pattern, the
names and contact information (including e-mail addresses) of 3 legal references, and an official law
school transcript. (A student copy is acceptable, pending your order of an official transcript.) Please
send your application as one PDF document, using our online application system:
