COUNCIL FOR A STRONG AMERICA

Policy Associate at Illinois Children’s Advocacy Organization

Chicago, IL Office

Terrific opportunity to put your energy and experience to work with an extraordinary team committed to making a difference in the lives of America’s kids, especially those most at risk.

About Us: Council for a Strong America – Illinois is one state office of a national, bipartisan, nonprofit organization that works to influence state and federal public policy about the best ways to help children get off to the right start. We build and mobilize membership organizations of high-profile and credible community leaders to promote research-driven investments in programs that can help kids – particularly those who are most at risk – realize a greater shot at success in school and in life.

This Policy Associate position would have primary responsibility for recruiting, engaging, and mobilizing our retired senior military leader members of Mission: Readiness. But it would also function as part of a four-person team to staff our other two Illinois membership organizations:  Fight Crime: Invest in Kids (law enforcement leaders) and ReadyNation (business leaders).  Our organizations focus on high-quality early care and education, prevention of child abuse and neglect, after-school programs for youth, juvenile justice issues, child nutrition improvements and obesity prevention, and other interventions to help keep kids on track.

The Policy Associate will work with the State Director and the Illinois team to engage, educate and mobilize our members, coordinate work with state and local allies, and manage a wide range of activities ranging from news conferences to meetings with state and federal policymakers.

Qualifications: We seek a versatile, enthusiastic, well-organized individual with a passion for helping children and youth thrive. Ideal candidates will have some professional experience in advocacy, media relations, public policy, and/or campaigns. He or she must have proven experience in managing projects and people, and know how to enlist and mobilize community leaders to take action. Successful candidates will possess excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrate a solid understanding of the state legislative process and of earned media strategies.   Travel (almost exclusively in Illinois) is required for this position.  Some experience in public speaking is preferred.  Macintosh computer, Microsoft Office, and Salesforce database familiarity, and knowledge of issues facing children and youth are a plus.

Responsibilities:  This position will be based in Chicago.  The Associate will take primary responsibility for increasing the Mission: Readiness retired military leader membership, organizing and involving members in a variety of actions in support of our policy agenda, and generation of media attention. The Associate will also have the opportunity to assist with a wide variety of other tasks in our small office.

Salary: Commensurate with experience, plus excellent benefits (including employer contribution to a retirement plan and generous health insurance coverage).
