CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (CDO)

An Atlanta accredited non-profit organization serving as a local and nationally respected and prominent resource in the community for those in need of help is seeking a Chief Development Officer (CDO). This organization is one of Atlanta’s longest continuously operating social services agencies.

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will plan and oversee implementation of all fund development activities to advance the philanthropic efforts of this relationship-driven and outcome-focused $14M agency. This includes but is not limited to major gifts, the annual fund, donor relations, planned giving, grants, special events, governance, and volunteer engagement. This position reports to the CEO, works in collaboration with the Marketing department, and serves on the agency’s Senior Leadership Team.

Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with major donors, prospects, foundations, corporations and community stakeholders.
  • Foster a culture of philanthropy throughout the entire organization.
  • Work with the CEO, Board Development Committee, Resource Development Committee and Board President to set goals and key strategies for fund development, to meet the critical financial needs of the agency; with respect to the sustainability goals and objectives of the agency’s Strategic Plan.
  • Plan, implement, measure, and report on all fund development activities.
  • Provide leadership and coaching to staff, Board, and volunteers.
  • Ability to inform and inspire donors to understand the mission and impact of the organization and how they can best contribute to the achievement of its mission.
  • Responsible for handling various resource developmentneeds as it relates to the following areas within the organization:

Fundraising

  • Understands the State and Federal funding landscape to strategically maximize revenue opportunities. Attract financial resources through a comprehensive fundraising strategy in collaboration with program, grant, marketing, and development teams. Carry a portfolio of major gift donors that results in significant major gifts each year, steward those donors, and create a departmental structure so that other staff are engaging in moves management initiatives. Develop and implement in collaboration with the special events department a sponsorship program to attract companies and businesses to sponsor special events, programs, and the agency and a whole.

Donor Stewardship

  • Develop, implement and manage a donor relations and stewardship program which appropriately and consistently promotes interaction with and recognition of donors at all levels and age ranges. Guide staff and volunteers on measurable stewardship initiatives.

Planned Giving/Endowments

  • Manage Planned Giving/Legacy Programs, including gifts made through bequests, trusts, charitable gift annuities and other planned giving vehicles.

Management

  • Manage the Development, Volunteer, and Grants Departments. Develop and manage department budgets. Work with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to set and follow resource development budget, manage fundraising receivables and develop strategies for collections. Implement volunteer engagement plans for volunteer positions needed in order to facilitate fundraising. Serve as a liaison to and manage committees: Resource Development Committee and Planned Giving/Legacy Committee. Collaborate with Marketing Department to develop fundraising campaigns including social networking strategies that support fundraising.

Volunteer Programs

  • Create a pipeline of talent for Board and committees. In collaboration with the CEO, oversee board engagement, governance and pipelining.

Grants

  • Collaborate with the department to identify opportunities to secure new grants and maintain existing grants where possible.

Qualifications:

  • At least 8-10 years progressively responsible experience as a leader in a combination of high-profile corporate, entrepreneurial and/or non-profit settings with major responsibility for business sales and/or fundraising and institutional advancement, and experience in managing a significant fund-development program, marketing, financial management, organizational development and governance.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, with a Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Proven history of high-level, high-return fundraising or business development results based on building strong, enduring relationships with donors/customers.
  • Comprehensive management skills and experience, including but not limited to short and long-term planning and evaluation, direction, and team-building and development through coaching, support, and motivation of professional staff.
  • Demonstrated success in development, fundraising, and volunteer management including: annual campaign planning, donor cultivation, planned giving.
  • Knowledge and experience in the following areas:foundation and corporate relations, digital platforms and fundraising (including face-to-face solicitation, grant writing, special events, telephone solicitations and direct mail), gift processing, prospect and donor histories, fundraising reporting and Talent Management.
  • Administrative expertise, including: Donor management software, word processing, analytics, spreadsheet applications and database management.
  • A personal commitment to and understanding of the Jewish community, Jewish values and broader civic and community issues a plus.
  • Must be able to work and/or participate in community wide events on nights and weekends, out-of-town meetings, and travel to conferences.
