Summary

The Director of Human Resources plays a critical role in helping Atlanta International School (AIS) create and maintain a workplace that is positive, transparent, and inclusive. The role will guide the rebranding and rebuilding of the human resource function in ways that allow greater focus on the talent management life cycle- from candidate recruitment, employee development through to employee exit.   In addition, the Director of Human Resources will support AIS in the creation of the systems and processes needed to effectively manage talent and lead teams.  The Director of Human Resources oversees compensation and benefits, policy creation and implementation, employee communications and relations and serves as a collaborative business partner with all departments. The Director of Human Resources will provide guidance to ensure AIS is in compliance with all relevant Federal and State employment laws in the protection of both AIS and its employees.

In the Area of Talent Development & Management

  • Sets vision, goals, and strategy for talent management including recruitment, orientation, on-boarding, retention and department/AIS-wide re-organizations in alignment with the school’s strategic priorities and ongoing business needs.
  • Provides comprehensive support to hiring managers, including talent recruitment and hiring.
  • Facilitates visa and work permitting process, from initial application, ongoing visa and work permitting maintenance, and renewal for all eligible employees, in partnership with the Heads of School and the school’s immigration attorneys.

In the Area of Performance Management

  • Provides guidance on incentive programs and leads all performance management initiatives including annual reviews.
  • Leads the design, development and implementation of AIS-wide training and initiatives related to legal requirements and professional conduct.

In the Area of Policy Creation and Implementation

  • Provides HR related guidance, direction and oversight to the school. Oversees and guides decisions regarding processes and policies, ensuring consistency, equity and clear communication.
  • Develops, recommends and implements HR policies and procedures to support strategic and business goals.

In the Area of Compensation and Benefits

  • Leads compensation strategy, including annual updates, benchmarking against salary surveys, merit pool and market place adjustments.
  • Ensures immediate and accurate access to employee information through the management of payroll systems.
  • Manages and processes (in times of need) employee payroll.
  • Manages and facilitates FMLA benefits in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Leads benefits strategy (medical, 403B plan, disability, etc.) contract negotiations, benefits administration, annual audits and open enrollment process. May serve as a trustee, plan administrator and fiduciary for benefit programs.

In the Area of Employee Relations

  • Handles highly confidential and sensitive information appropriately and ensures communication of critical employee issues with appropriate managers.
  • Supports resolving interpersonal conflicts between or among faculty and staff and advises them on potential next steps.
  • Leads an annual employee handbook review process and updates or refines the employee handbook as necessary.
  • Leads and facilitates the Human Resource Advisory Council (HRAC).

In the Area of Risk Management

  • Provides HR expertise and consultation to ensure compliance with applicable labor and employment practices.
  • Serves as leadership liaison for all brokers, vendors, auditors and third-party administrators.
  • Regularly conducts internal audits (classifications, employee files, etc.) to ensure controls are in place and compliant with all applicable federal, state and local laws.

Skills and Requirements

Demonstrates proven expertise and a track record of success as a team leader with expert abilities to lead, inspire, and motivate teams:

  • Developing and communicating the vision for Human Resources at AIS, establishing strategic priorities and operational plans in a collaborative and transparent manner.
  • Leveraging diverse views through appropriate, professional channels (e.g. HRAC), to encourage improvement and innovation.
  • Communicating with presence and influence in both formal and informal settings, preparing and presenting persuasive written and verbal materials to senior-level leadership.
  • Ability to quickly establish credibility with management and senior management as an effective resource and problem solver; ability to work well in a team environment and in partnership with leadership.
  • History of operating with high ethical standards, integrity, discretion and confidentiality.
  • Considerable ability to exercise judgment and make independent analyses and recommendations on difficult and sensitive employee relations matters. Extensive experience in conducting fact-finding internal investigations.
  • Effective organization, team orientation and leadership skills, with the demonstrated ability to initiate, develop and maintain productive relationships at all levels of the organization and to plan, organize, coordinate and direct the activities of the HR Department.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong negotiation and dispute resolution skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of Employee Relations or HR leadership experience supporting a diverse employee population.
