Position Summary: 
The Assistant Director of Communications plays a key role in communicating the breadth of the Marist School educational experience to the school community and the general public. A skilled storyteller, he/she will work closely with the Director of Communications on a mission-focused marketing communications strategy for the purpose of promoting key messages about the school, inspiring engagement among the school’s internal and external communities, increasing awareness of the complete scope of Marist School’s offerings, and advancing the Marist mission.  

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Partner with the Director of Communications to carry out the day-to-day communications needs for Marist School, developing a content strategy and school-wide editorial calendar that captures the people and stories of the school and inspires deeper engagement in support of admissions, fundraising, and overall awareness goals
  • Assist in developing an integrated marketing communications plan which incorporates the needs of departments across campus, including, but not limited to, admissions, advancement (alumni, communications, development), business office, athletics, fine arts, academics, counseling, and campus ministry
  • Using a journalistic writing and editing style, serve as the school’s primary content creator, writer, and storyteller, developing and executing a messaging strategy and content calendar that utilizes multiple platforms and channels; ensure key institutional messages are reflected in all school communication channels, including social media, website, email communications, and print collateral
  • Plan and implement a social media strategy that drives engagement, increases website traffic, and boosts awareness of Marist School and its educational program; actively review analytics to constantly fine-tune strategy
  • Oversee the development and implementation of an annual advertising strategy to communicate admissions opportunities to prospective families and to promote the school’s summer camps, Marist Evening Series, and other programs
  • Manage the school’s media relations, including writing and distributing news releases; cultivate relationships with local media, sending them relevant pitches, connecting with them on social media, and managing all follow-through with them; maintain media lists; regularly monitor media coverage and social media sentiment; update annual listings
  • Work with the Creative Services Manager to develop a video strategy to keep Marist’s website and social media platforms fresh and engaging and to create video content to enhance Marist’s admissions efforts
  • Work with the Creative Services Manager to develop visuals to be used to support and enhance the implementation of the content strategy
  • Plan and write editorial content for Marist School News (monthly e-newsletter); contribute content for Marist Matters magazine, the Philanthropy Report, and other Marist collateral materials; assist in editing and proofreading content, using extreme attention to detail
  • Create, edit, and send the Weekly Way parent e-newsletter and oversee other email communications, coordinating message distribution and streamlining communications so as not to overlap among constituent groups; keep abreast of industry trends in digital communications; measure the effectiveness of communications efforts through metrics and analytics
  • Steward Marist School’s editorial and brand standards by ensuring the consistency and visual integrity of Marist’s communications
  • Implement systems for proofreading to ensure high-quality, accurate, and consistent copy for all print and online content
  • Provide photography and videography support, as needed
  • Other duties, as assigned

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field preferred
  • Four to six years progressive work experience, preferably in an independent school or college, with strong writing and project management skills and supervision experience
  • Creative storyteller well versed in developing print and online content with excellent attention to detail in the written word
  • Strategic thinker with demonstrated knowledge of principles of integrated marketing and communications, especially digital marketing, and experience creating and executing a multi-channel content strategy that drives increased engagement
  • High proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Suite
  • Familiarity with using analytics to guide content strategy
  • Multi-faceted writer with outstanding editing and proofreading skills; ability to write long-form, marketing, news, social media, and other types of copy; knowledge of AP style a plus
  • Ability to understand, capture, and tell stories that convey the mission and tone of Marist School
  • Excellent project management, organization, and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously and the needs of multiple institutional stakeholders
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently as part of a team
  • Superior client service and interpersonal skills with proven follow-through ability
  • Strong attention to detail and deadlines required; able to work quickly and accurately
  • Must have a positive mindset and be flexible and adaptable
