Assistant Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Katherine Hamm Center (part-time)

Start Date: August 2019

The mission of the Atlanta Speech School is to help each person develop his or her full potential through language and literacy. Established in 1938, the Atlanta Speech School serves children and adults with speech, hearing, language, or learning disabilities through clinical and educational programs, in addition to providing professional development for teachers and educators in partner schools and preschools. All of our programs are built upon a foundation of caring instruction, based on proven research, and strengthened with a depth of academic and clinical knowledge.

The Katherine Hamm Center has an opening for a part-time assistant teacher for the 2019-2020 school year. The Katherine Hamm Center is a program for children from birth through elementary school who are deaf or hard of hearing.


POSITION SUMMARY:

The Katherine Hamm Center Assistant Teacher is an integral part of the development of each child in the classroom. The assistant models language and learning when needed to prompt students, as well as assisting the teacher in routines, lesson implementation, and material coordination. This is a full time position.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES OF THE JOB:

  • Be present in the classroom unless the teacher requests otherwise
  • Follow the teacher’s lesson plan
  • Be knowledgeable of each student’s goals (e.g. language, speech, auditory, etc.)
  • Stimulate the development of each student’s goals (e.g., language, speech, auditory, etc.)
  • Provide feedback to the classroom teacher on his/her observations of students
  • Assist students in following programs, strategies, exercises, and materials identified/developed and introduced by the teacher
  • Assist with follow-up instruction for small groups or individuals
  • Help support large-group instruction as needed
  • Ensure that only one person is speaking at a time (e.g., avoid talking while the teacher is talking)
  • Assist in implementing the teacher’s behavior management plan using the same emphasis and techniques
  • Assist the teacher in the preparation of material, including making, gathering, or copying teaching materials, and preparing classroom/bulletin board displays
  • Carry out the activities that are assigned by the classroom teacher
  • Help prepare and clean up after activities
  • Participate in the assistant teachers’ duty schedule as assigned by the Program Coordinator (e.g., recess duty, nap duty, enrichment, etc.)
  • Assist in supervising students’ arrival and departure
  • Escort students to places in the building (e.g., bathroom, media center, etc.)
  • Assume the activities of the classroom teacher when the classroom teacher is absent (i.e., the substitute will perform the assistant teacher’s duties and the assistant teacher will assume the classroom teacher’s role)

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Knowledge or experience with child language development.
  • Knowledge or experience with children who are deaf or hard of hearing preferred.

This part-time school position offers complimentary meals during working hours; and accrued sick leave.

Salary:

Salary is commensurate with experience.
