Earthjustice is now accepting applications for a senior research and policy analyst (RPA) position to join our San Francisco-based International Program. The RPA will support and collaborate with our team of lawyers and scientists working to speed the transition from dirty fossil fuels to clean energy solutions in key countries around the world.

Earthjustice is the premier nonprofit environmental law organization.  We take on the biggest, most precedent-setting cases across the country.  We wield the power of law and the strength of partnership to protect people’s health; to preserve magnificent places and wildlife; to advance clean energy; and to combat climate change.  We partner with thousands of groups, supporters, individuals and communities to engage the critical environmental issues of our time, and bring about positive change.  We are here because the earth needs a good lawyer.

Founded in 1971, Earthjustice wields the power of law and the strength of partnership to protect people’s health, to preserve magnificent places and wildlife, to advance clean energy, and to combat climate change around the world. Drawing on deep experience in foreign, US and international environmental, energy and human rights law, and foreign and international litigation, we work with partners in South Africa, Indonesia, Australia, Latin America and elsewhere on domestic and international legal advocacy to reduce dependence on dirty fossil fuels and speed the transition to clean energy.

The position will be located in San Francisco. Other locations may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Responsibilities

  • Support and collaborate with our team of lawyers, partners and allies developing foreign domestic and international legal advocacy to reduce dependence on dirty fossil fuels and remove barriers to greater deployment of renewable energy.
  • Conduct factual research, review and evaluate technical and policy documents to support all stages of litigation, legal advocacy, and regulatory reform to remove barriers to greater deployment of renewable energy.
  • Collaboratively draft comment letters, petitions, technical affidavits and declarations, and public presentations, and prepare supporting materials such as photographs, maps, graphs, and technical backgrounders.
  • Engage and manage the involvement of external scientists and technical experts in legal advocacy to ensure their reports and declarations are clear and compelling to decision-makers and the public.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with foreign and US allies, attorneys, clients, coalition partners, and technical experts.

 Qualifications

  • Graduate degree, preferably in natural or applied sciences, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in environmental science or policy related to mining, fracking, air and water pollution, power plants, and/or energy systems.
  • At least five years of experience doing environmentally focused work.
  • Experience working in cross-cultural settings.
  • Excellent research, writing, and computer skills.
  • Proficiency in working with technical experts.
  • Initiative, good judgment, and a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with colleagues, clients, partners and community-based organizations.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally.
  • Commitment to serving the public interest.
  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse and non-US cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
  • Commitment to helping create a diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce and culture that encourages and celebrates differences.

The ideal candidate will also have substantial experience working in a country other than the United States, and professional fluency in Spanish or Indonesian.

We offer a mission- and employee-focused work environment and a competitive compensation package, including excellent benefits. Earthjustice is an equal opportunity employer and highly values diversity.
