Overview of Department Led by the Executive Director, AJWS’s Western Region office (a team of four) is responsible for overseeing and implementing the vision of AJWS in the San Francisco Bay Area and Western Region. The scope of responsibilities include revenue generation through major gifts, identifying and qualifying major donor prospects, cultivating major donor prospects, maintaining relationships with key donors and stakeholders, and effectively articulating AJWS’s global purpose and impact.

 

Overview of Position Working as a member of a fast-paced Regional Office, the primary responsibility of the Development Officer is to to expand and grow our major gifts portfolio in the Western Region by stewarding existing major donor and major donor prospects (including individuals and family foundation donors) throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and Western Region. The Development Officer will design and implement strategies to broaden AJWS’s Global Circle, a network of emerging young donors and global human rights advocates in their 20’s and 30’s. The Development Officer will work to engage the next generation of philanthropists and future major donors. They will plan special events that will serve to increase Global Circle leadership opportunities, and achieve fundraising revenue. In addition, the Development Officer will play a key team role for all common development efforts in the San Francisco office.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

Steward and solicit a portfolio of 150+ major donors and major donor prospects from the San Francisco Bay Area and possibly other parts of the Western Region who contribute or have the capacity to contribute $10,000+ annually. Design and implement short and long term strategies to strengthen existing relationships with current major donors and to expand the donor pipeline through acquisition of new major donors, including special events, parlor meetings, and other donor cultivation activities. Steward the San Francisco Bay Area Global Circle portfolio and the local Global Circle Steering Committee Cultivate and foster emerging Global Circle leadership. Plan special events that will serve to increase Global Circle participation and achieve fundraising revenue. Collaborate with all AJWS divisions and stakeholders to successfully achieve annual development revenue goals. Plan, coordinate and staff domestic trips to Western Region cities for AJWS Senior Staff and AJWS grantees. Conduct prospect research, identification and cultivation. Articulate verbally and in writing AJWS’s mission, values, history, and programs. Stay abreast of philanthropic, economic, social, and community trends related to American Jewish World Service. Establish trust, maintain strong relationships and develop partnerships with San Francisco Bay Area national board members and key stakeholders. Support the Executive Director and Associate Director to maximize department efficiency. Qualifications: Experience with face-to-face major gift solicitations and proven success closing gifts within a non-profit environment. Driven to build individual and regional major gifts portfolio in the Bay Area and Western Region, including smaller markets like Portland and Sacramento. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage up and support Senior Western Region staff to focus on Major Gift  prospects. Motivated to develop the next generation of philanthropists. Have ties to the local Bay Area and Jewish young professional community. Excellent project management skills. Prior success in event planning. Donor research experience/research skills and aptitude. Ability to articulate complex ideas and strategies. Comfort around individuals with wealth and power. Ability to multi-task; have a flexible work style. Ability to connect people to a mission Ability to write well Attention to detail, well organized with ability to meet deadlines Preferred Experience and Skills: Desire to develop a career in Fundraising Development experience with a focus on major gifts Experience/comfort with public speaking Familiarity with non-profit environment Social media skills Experience working with members of a senior leadership team (CSuite and/or Board Members) Strong commitment to the mission and vision of AJWS with the ability and desire to serve as a compelling ambassador for the organization. A bachelor’s degree/advanced degree or clear record of continuing professional development preferred.
