Job Description Summary:

 

This is a 11 month, 100%, classified position.

 

Under general supervision, assists in the development and implementation of a program for the prevention and care of athletic injuries; administers first-aid and emergency care; treats injuries and provide rehabilitation according to medical directions and standard medical practices; and to perform related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of:

• Methods, practices, terminology and techniques used in athletic training, including but not limited to the prevention of injuries.

• Athletic injuries, applicable treatment, rehabilitation, first aid and emergency care techniques.

• Operation of rehabilitation equipment and therapeutic modalities used in the athletic training clinic.

 

Skills in:

• Development and implementation of athletic injury prevention techniques.

• Preparation of inventory and budget information for athletic training supplies and equipment.

• Understanding of and ability to work within scope of athletic training, prepare and maintain accurate athletic injury records and reports, and utilize word processing and relevant athletic injury database software applications.

• Communicating effectively both orally and in writing.

 

Essential Duties:

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES : The following duties are typical of those performed by employees in this job title; however, employees may perform other related duties, and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each employee in the job title.

• Receives and reviews student health history records and informs coaching staff of health problems; maintains formal, confidential student health records;

• Coordinates and assists physician/s with screening of pre-participation physical examinations of athletes;

• Counsels students with mental health, general health or sports related injuries and makes referrals as needed to appropriate health agencies; decides, in absence of team physician, whether an athlete is medically able to participate in practice and/or return to competition;

• Administers emergency first aid, and emergency medical care, including lifesaving procedures, to student-athletes and identifies and treats athletic related injuries;

• Reviews athletic insurance coverage and assists student athletes and staff in the correct submission of insurance claim forms; completes medical insurance forms;

• Maintains accurate and detailed injury and treatment reports through record keeping and documentation;

• Provides athletic training services in conjunction with team practices and at hosted athletic events for both home and away teams;

• Schedules and coordinates athletic training staff and students or athletic health care services for all team practices and for both in season and non-traditional competitions.

• Prepares written policies and procedures regarding emergency management, treatment and reconditioning of injured athletes including an annual review and update of established programs as necessary;

• Administers the use of rehabilitation equipment and operates related therapeutic modalities as directed by the treating physician/s;

• Supervises the use of athletic training equipment; maintains the athletic training clinic in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition;

• Assists in budget development, recommends and administers functional budgets for first aid supplies and equipment;

• Purchases, repairs and maintains supplies and equipment; maintains an accurate inventory of all athletic training clinic supplies and equipment; maintains first aid kits and supplies;

• Inspects playing fields and athletic equipment; notes and reports health and/or safety hazards;

• Develops and maintains cooperative and effective working relationship with others including athletes, athletic trainers, coaches, parents, physicians and health center personnel;

• Facilitates communication between athletes, coaches, parents, administration, team physician, student health services, risk management, and all other related parties as defined by the Student-Athlete Authorization Consent for Disclosure when appropriate;

• Works in conjunction with coaches to ensure safety in the design and implementation of a fitness program for those athletes under the care of the sports medicine team;

• Works to assist athletes with interpersonal issues including sexuality, drug abuse, personal, social and educational goals and objectives. In case of serious psychological difficulties, makes the appropriate professional referrals;

• Reads, interprets, applies and explains rules regulations, policies and procedures related to athletic training and health services;

• Evaluates and recommend new techniques and equipment that would enhance the benefit of the athletic training program;

• In accordance with Bylaw 9 of the CCCAA Constitution and Bylaws, works in conjunction with the team physician/s to oversee a concussion management program and return to play protocol. Also, coordinates education seminars for both the coaching staffs and student-athletes, and administers concussion baseline testing for all student-athletes who participate in intercollegiate athletics.

 

Education and Experience:

 

• Proof of current certification as an Athletic Trainer (ATC ) in good standing from the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC )

• Master’s degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE accredited athletic training education program OR Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE accredited athletic training education program AND a Master’s degree in Kinesiology or related discipline.

• Proof of current certification in First Aid, CPR and AED for the Professional Rescuer/Healthcare Provider

• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, religious backgrounds of community college personnel and students and the communities served by the College.

 

Specified position must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record; specified position must be willing to accommodate flexible work shifts.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

• Athletic training experience in an intercollegiate athletics environment.

• Minimum two years of experience as a certified athletic trainer.

• Experience supervising students in an athletic training clinical experience setting.

• Evidence of ability to work successfully in a team environment.

• Demonstrated pattern of participation in continuing education and professional growth activities.
