Director of Finance 

The Organization

Midtown Alliance is a coalition of business and civic leaders focused on promoting economic development and creating an exceptional urban experience in Midtown, Atlanta. Priorities include capital projects and infrastructure improvements, public safety, transportation and urban planning, maintenance and beautification, technology innovation, membership, grant funding and the marketing for these initiatives and Midtown Atlanta generally. Midtown Improvement District (MID) is a community improvement district (CID) created to offer capital improvements, enhanced public safety and maintenance services within the Midtown district. The MID is funded through a voluntary contribution of property taxes (5 mills) by commercial property owners and plays a pivotal role in implementing Blueprint Midtown, the master plan envisioned by the community and spearheaded by Midtown Alliance. The MID is governed by a 9- person Board of Directors and staffed by Midtown Alliance.  

The Position 

This position represents a unique opportunity join a dynamic and highly-respected organization whose work has led to the growth of one of the most vibrant and successful areas of our City.

The Director of Finance  will be responsible for all Accounting and Human Resources functions for Midtown Alliance and the Midtown Improvement District, including Financial Statement preparation, managing the organizations’ investments and the review and procurement of all insurance products, employee benefits, compensation and payroll compliance.

The Director of Finance will report to the CEO of Midtown Alliance, serve as a member of the leadership team, and work closely with staff members as well as Board members from both entities.

Qualifications

The Director of Finance will be a seasoned and mature leader with broad audit, finance and HR experience, skilled at gathering and evaluating financial information, developing relevant reports, making actionable recommendations to leadership and taking timely and appropriate action.

The Candidate will ideally have some experience managing financial affairs for nonprofit entities that have multiple public (federal, state and municipal) and private funding sources and project grants. In addition the ideal candidate will have experience in managing a variety of HR matters including employee benefits, new hires and payroll.

Specific responsibilities include:

Finance

  • Oversee cash, investment and asset management.
  • Oversee finance activities and banking relationships.
  • Develop and utilize forward-looking analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans.

Accounting and Administration

  • Oversee and ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and function and ensure the legal/regulatory compliance of all financial functions.
  • Ensure appropriate internal controls and financial procedures and that accounting practices are in accordance with written policies.
  • Confirm timeliness, accuracy and usefulness of financial and management reporting for leadership, boards of directors and funders.
  • Oversee preparation/communication of monthly internal financial statements.
  • Review construction and other project reports and oversee project outlays relative to approved funding levels and deadlines.
  • Monitor MID tax receipts and work with consultants and Fulton County officials to oversee annual review of CID tax digests and tax bills.
  • Prepare year-end financial statements in accordance with GAAP/FASB standards; coordinate the annual audits and proper filings of OMB reports/tax filings.

Planning and Operations 

  • Coordinate the development and monitoring of budgets.
  • Develop relevant financial business plans and forecasts.
  • Participate in policy development.
  • Work with Board, Committees and legal counsel on matters related to finance and audits.
  • Make presentations as needed to leadership and relevant board committees, including Midtown Alliance’s Finance and Audit Committee as needed.
  • Represent Midtown Alliance and MID as appropriate on financial and operational issues with third parties and in financial dealings with external bodies such as banks, governmental entities and auditors.
  • Ensure the proper administration of public and private sector grants.
  • Manage semi-monthly  payroll, monitor sick and vacation accruals;  Paycom expertise a plus.
  • Responsible for business insurance coverage administration and risk management oversight.
  • Assume other operational duties as appropriate.

The successful candidate will have:

  • An accounting degree from accredited college/university. Active CPA a plus.
  • At least five years relevant professional experience with a demonstrated record of integrity and leadership, and a career progression of increasing responsibility.  
  • Previous experience with a visible nonprofit organization with a significant budget.
  • Hands-on general ledger preparation; experience with multiple divisions, project management accounting and payroll allocations.  Experience working with Sage software would be a plus.
  • Knowledge and understanding of non-profit reporting (Form 990) and federally required OMB-A133 audits.
  • A highly professional demeanor, be politically astute and possess excellent communication/presentation skills; and engender the respect and confidence of all staff, leadership and partners.     

This is a full-time position. A competitive salary commensurate with experience plus an excellent benefits package will be offered.  Benefits include Health, Vision, Dental, Short term and Long term Disability Insurance plus a 403b with 100% match up to 5% of compensation. Paid time off includes fifteen days of vacation, up to ten sick days and thirteen Holidays per year.
