The Director for Student Affairs reports to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and, along with the Associate Dean, performs all general student support duties and supports events and programs delivered through the Student Affairs Office.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

General Student Support

  • Provide academic and personal advising, counseling, and referrals to law students and law student groups in individual sessions, group meetings, and electronic and print formats.
  • Help revise and maintain the Student Handbook, and develop expertise in implementation and enforcement of its provisions
  • Supervise and maintain records for the Independent Study course
  • Serve as the primary law administrative contact for students in the JD/MBA program
  • Conceptualize, prepare, and edit reports relating to student services functions for faculty, staff, University, and external agencies
  • Serve on various faculty and staff committees as assigned
  • Assist in the administration of the Student Affairs Office. Along with the Associate Dean, select, train, provide work direction, and evaluate professional and/or support staff
  • Assist as needed in development and management of the annual operating budget
  • Represent the law school to the broader academic and legal community
  • Assess programs and services provided by the department
  • Provide backup during exam administrations
  • Serve as backup to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs
  • Perform related duties as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge and Understanding: Knowledge of resources, principles and practices of advising, counseling, and administration in a higher education or related setting required. Knowledge of disability law preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office software required. Proficiency with Datatel or other student records systems preferred. Knowledge of FERPA preferred.
  • Ability to: Establish and maintain positive and professional relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the legal community. Communicate clearly, concisely, and persuasively in oral and written formats. Earn trust and maintain confidentiality. Exercise discretion, maintain confidentiality, and display respect with regard to sensitive topics. Work independently, organize simultaneous projects, demonstrate initiative and enthusiasm, and exercise professional discretion.  Think analytically and creatively to solve complex problems. Prioritize and manage detail-oriented daily tasks with the highest level of accuracy, timeliness, efficiency and customer service. Model professional leadership skills.
  • Experience and Education: Prior experience with student services/disability services, particularly in counseling role, strongly preferred. JD and/or graduate level counseling degree required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Experience working with diverse groups of people preferred.
