PURPOSE OF POSITION:  The Major Individual Gifts Officer is responsible for developing and implementing the overall strategy for solicitation, cultivation and stewardship of major individual donors. The Major Gifts Officer provides direct supervision to the Planned Giving Officer and Development Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Covenant House Georgia reserves the right to unilaterally modify, remove, or add to any of the following:

  • Lead a deeper and more expanded major gift program at Covenant House Georgia.
  • Build and manage a portfolio of 100-125 qualified major gift donors and prospects, with the ability to grow portfolio.
  • Proactive prospecting, relationship building and networking to build portfolio and strengthen the pipeline of major gift donors and prospects.
  • Prepare written materials such as visit strategies/briefings, correspondence, solicitation/proposal and pledge documents.
  • Develop a well-organized plan on how best to engage our current and potential donors through portfolio.
  • Create and implement development strategy for our annual campaigns (online and written appeals).
  • Create and execute meaningful points of engagement for our donors to enhance team portfolio efforts.
  • Handle other major and planned gift responsibilities as needed.
  • Research current lists of high-net donors and identify those with potential for higher giving levels by assessing, when possible, their giving potential, recommending target “ask" amounts, and developing strategies for soliciting the gift.
  • Work with Director of Development to develop presentation materials, including background information on donors, scripts and talking points, and gift proposals for meetings with individuals.
  • Prepare lists of prospective donor calls for Executive Director and/or Director of Development
  • Establish and ensure appropriate and meaningful donor recognition and manage the stewardship process for individual donors including appropriate acknowledgments and preparing pledge documents when appropriate. 
  • Communicate with selected donors (in person) that resources have been used as intended and share results of donor investments or other relevant information to donors.
  • Manage prospect donor management system that includes information relating to major individual donors, format for preparation and timely filing of complete contact reports, and a system for managing appropriate follow-up activities.

  • Make direct, face-to-face solicitations, and assist the board and other staff with their solicitation (e.g. provide portfolio development support, strategic counsel, and help with donor communications)
  • Upholds Covenant House Georgia standards of conduct, policies and procedures at all times.
  • Models appropriate, professional behavior for staff to establish and maintain superior services to youth in a safe and inviting atmosphere.
  • Ensures that all buildings and surrounding areas are safe and free from any conditions that may cause harm or danger to youth, staff, volunteers, or visitors.
  • Ensures compliance of files in accordance to specific city, state and Federal guidelines.
  • Participates in other CHGA programs and activities as required.
  • Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, representatives of other agencies, and the public.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES:  As assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:  Bachelor’s Degree in related field preferred; minimum of 3-5 years major gift fundraising, 5-7 years preferred. Experience with donor management software; experience in working with high net worth donors; experience in personal cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and closing of major gifts at the five-figure and six-figure and above levels.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed. Must be available for some evening and weekend work as required.
  • Ability to work standing, walking, and/or sitting a minimum of 8 hours per day/shift.
  • Ability to drive agency or personal vehicles to transport items and/or persons.
  • Valid Georgia Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to travel as needed for training or to fulfill job requirements.
