Job Summary

Enterprise is seeking a Cultural Resilience Program Director. The ideal candidate will be an experienced creative practitioner with cross-disciplinary expertise in placemaking, social determinants of health, community development, cultural anthropology, participatory research or community-engaged design.

Enterprise is a national organization with offices throughout the country. The Northern California team covers a range of the most relevant and pressing issues facing the affordable housing industry today -including sustainable and equitable communities, and public housing revitalization.  This new position will share responsibility for Enterprise’s role in the Partnership for HOPE SF, a collaboration with The San Francisco Foundation and City of San Francisco to create the enabling conditions for residents of four formerly isolated communities anchored by public housing to experience connection, belonging, agency and wellness in new mixed-income communities.

In this role, the new Cultural Resilience Program Director will build upon the pioneering creative placemaking, community sustainability and resilience efforts of partner organizations over the past several years. The person in this position will embody and demonstrate the value of integrating art, culture, and creativity strategies into projects with our partners.  The Cultural Resilience Program Director will contribute to trauma-informed/healing practices and culture-shifting at many levels of the HOPE SF initiative, including providing technical assistance on cultural resiliency at the initiative-level and at the four sites. In this role, the person will carry out strategic actions that advance the vision of racial equity and inclusion of the HOPE SF initiative.

Locally, this position will report to the Senior Program Director for Public Housing at Enterprise, and support the City HOPE SF backbone team, The San Francisco Foundation, HOPE SF property operators, and TA providers (Trusted Space Partners). Within the Enterprise framework, the Cultural Resilience Program Director will also work in concert with the National Enterprise Cultural Resilience team.

Job Responsibilities

To carry out this work, the Cultural Resilience Program Director can expect to undertake these functions:

  • Strategic Planning and Program Design—Collaborate and coordinate with Enterprise staff, HOPE SF stakeholders and TA teams to strategically plan and manage programmatic activities directly related to trauma-informed place-building and culture-shifting at a systems-level to support isolated low-income communities, including Culture and Creativity grantmaking and peer-learning cohorts, and developing tools and resources for stakeholders;
  • Ambassador—Act as a highly visible ambassador for the value of culture and creativity as key strategies for building and sustaining community wellbeing, including cultural resilience, health and economic development, both internally and externally, through speaking, writing, and other forms of communication to a national audience and specific local communities.
  • Technical Assistance—Identify obstacles to success and provide expertise and assistance to HOPE SF stakeholders, including the development of new tools or resources to enhance inclusive and equitable outcomes and overcome obstacles within each unique local community;
  • Facilitation—Oversee implementation of culture-shift work plans including facilitating connections with potential partners, providing referrals to organizations, and coordinating technical assistance provided by Enterprise.
  • Team member—Participate in the Enterprise Northern California office’s endeavors to improve internal office operations and/or services provided to external partners.

Qualifications

  • Expertise in placemaking, community development, cultural anthropology, participatory research, community-engaged design, ethnography, or related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and applicable to topics of community development and cultural resiliency and inclusivity.
  • Experience with community engagement (specifically planning, facilitation, and follow-up) and leading collaborative meetings.
  • Knowledge of the Bay Area’s current social, economic and political landscape as it relates to housing, land use, transportation and growth trends. Preference for a candidate who understands community needs and perspective of stakeholders experiencing systemic isolation.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Ability to write memos and emails that effectively provide information and request responses.
  • Sound judgment and ability to identify and analyze typical work situations and develop solutions.
  • Able to work in a very collaborative and often fast-paced environment and must be able to engage in and manage simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems and take responsibility for moving tasks forward with minimal supervision.
  • Undergraduate degree with preference for graduate degree or at least six (6) years of relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience working in the affordable housing industry preferred.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of interdisciplinary collaboration among public-private sector partnerships.

Desired Characteristics for Candidates:

  • Lived experience and/or service that informs worldviews and/or perspectives about minority group status, to include race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, and disability.
  • Experience working with diverse range of communities and people, including non-English speakers.
  • Visual communication skills including proficiency with Adobe Suite.
  • Significant applied research and/or academic experience preferred.
