POSITION SUMMARY

The Grant Writing Manager is responsible for efforts to secure grants and contributions from private and corporate foundations to fund Open Hand’s annual operations, programs, special projects and capital purchases.  In doing so, this position will help broaden the organization’s resources by identifying and cultivating funders with an emphasis on prevention-based health and wellness initiatives and bridging current social service fundraising efforts.

 

NATURE AND SCOPE

Primary duties of the Grants Manager include helping to create and execute an annual plan for meeting revenue goals for government, foundation, civic and faith-based grants. The right candidate is process-oriented as well as a skilled writer and communicator who is able to effectively manage time and meet critical deadlines. Applicants should be comfortable talking about the programs and services of Open Hand with coworkers, program staff, department heads, government officials, corporate representatives, foundation staff members, board members and other persons of influence in the community. Attention to detail and the ability to write persuasively are very important. Approximately 80% of time should be dedicated to administrative work, grant/proposal writing, research and reporting, with the other 20% dedicated to meetings with external constituents. Attendance is required at events that sometimes take place outside the office and normal business hours.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

This position shares accountability for meeting annual government and foundation income goals with the Senior Manager of Grants and Contracts. Functional responsibilities include:

Relationship Building and Investment Stewardship

  • Researching and contacting potential foundation, government, and corporate funders to support capital improvements, organizational development, and programmatic needs.
  • Establishing and expanding relationships with grant funders and community partners, including regular communication regarding investment-related milestones/outcomes and general progress towards achieving the organizational mission.
  • Communicating regularly with Open Hand staff to build knowledge and awareness of grant-related practices and opportunities.

Proposal Development

  • Research, write, and submit competitive proposals to private and public foundations, corporations, and government agencies which align with organizational mission, strategic priorities, necessary capital improvements, and programmatic resource requirements.
  • Coordinate proposal & evaluation plan development with appropriate Open Hand staff.
  • Maintain required registrations to funding sources databases (i.e. grants.gov, Foundation Directory Online, Guidestar, etc.)

Grant Management

  • Compile and submit progress/final grant reports and other documentation as required by funding agencies.
  • Work with program implementation staff to track fund disbursement, and develop accurate financial reports documenting progress towards development budget goals.
  • Maintain grant-related resource directory, including funder research notes, grant application deadlines, grant reporting schedules, and other information as needed.
  • Maintain records of constituent contacts, application submission and grant award status in Salesforce.com and Giveffect.

Professional Development

  • Research evidence-based and emerging nutrition education practices and priorities.
  • Research best and emerging grant development and management practices.
  • Maintain the highest level of ethical conduct in the preparation, submission, and management of funding proposals, contracts, etc.

Program Development & Management Team Contributor

  • Evaluate new programmatic opportunities for mission alignment, capacity, resources, and priority.
  • Develop, implement, and revise processes to effectively manage new and existing programs across the organization.
  • Manage and facilitate appointed programmatic workgroups.
  • Assist in the assessment, refinement, and implementation of processes for all programs.
  • Meet regularly with the Senior Manager of Grants and Contracts, Senior Director of Resource Development and/or Senior Director of Client Services and Outcomes Tracking regarding grants receivables and anticipated receipt for cash flow planning.
  • Support the Development team, Senior Director of Resource Development, Executive Director and members of the Board of Directors and Development Committee in the cultivation and solicitation of other gifts as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Undergraduate degree in related field or related experience.

Experience:  Minimum of four years of successful experience in grants management for non-profit organizations, preferably working in health-related/public health field. Familiarity with healthcare funding sources is essential. Skills in Microsoft Office Suite are required. Contacts in government offices and the local philanthropic community are highly recommended. Experience using Salesforce.com or other donor management systems preferred.

 

Competencies:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must have excellent computer skills and a basic understanding of how programs work, measurable outcomes, and financial accounting.  Attention to detail and ability to organize information will be critical skills.  Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary.  The individual must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and be able to start and resume work on projects as priorities change.  This position requires a team-oriented person who understands the dynamic of working with a diverse team to achieve organization goals.
