Communications and Marketing Manager

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND

One Common Unity (OCU) breaks cycles of violence and builds compassionate, healthy communities through the transformative power of music, arts, and peace education. Founded in 2000 following a string of school shootings in Washington, D.C., OCU is a collaborative effort between educators, artists, and health practitioners dedicated to preventing violence and improving life outcomes for youth and families. Based in schools across D.C., we train the next generation of leaders in social emotional literacy, arts expression, and conflict transformation and support them to create positive social change and healing in their communities.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Reporting to and in partnership with the Executive Director, Managing Director and Operations Manager, the Communications and Marketing Manager is responsible for creating and implementing all of the organization’s marketing and outreach materials, strategies and communications. Responsibilities include:

  • Communications
    • Develop and implement a strategic communications and advocacy plan for One Common Unity;
    • Manage OCU’s social media presence, including working with outside consultants to implement strategic campaigns;
    • Produce engaging and motivating content for local and national press outlets, the OCU website and blogs, including supervising outside PR firms to support this effort;
    • Develop and send e-newsletters and e-blasts in Salesforce and Mailchimp;
    • Write and edit compelling letters, marketing, presentation and press materials and coordinate development and graphic design of materials (invitations, programs, postcards, signage, etc.).
  • Outreach
    • Build partnerships with community organizations, networks, and other relevant parties on a local and national level. Foster and maintain positive relationships with all partners, including serving as a point of contact;
    • Identify and facilitate opportunities to increase the visibility of OCU through participation in community and media events, conferences, and advocacy events;
    • Represent OCU at community events, meetings and conferences;
  • Other
    • Maintain accurate files/records and up-to-date organizational data;
    • Prepare regular reports for Executive and Managing Directors and complete in a timely manner;
    • Support the Development Team with outreach to sponsors for special events and programs;
    • Support the Development Team in the cultivation of individual donors;
    • Assist with other outreach and communications duties as needed.  

REPORTING

The position reports to the Managing Director and Operations Manager.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A commitment to and understanding of One Common Unity’s mission, including a basic understanding of the role that education
    and the arts can play in social change
  • A commitment to social justice, racial justice, experience with cultural humility, and comfort working with people from diverse backgrounds/different from oneself
  • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • A minimum of two years experience developing and implementing communications strategies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of communications, marketing, media relations, 
    and social media
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative connections with individuals from diverse backgrounds including colleagues, community members, volunteers, program participants, and donors
  • Experience working with and managing external vendors
  • Personal qualities of emotional maturity, humility, strong work ethic, and a roll-up-my-sleeves attitude
  • Familiarity with database systems and online social networks; experience with Salesforce and Mailchimp a plus

START DATE AND COMPENSATION

The projected start date is April 15 – June 15, 2019. Compensation is commensurate with experience in the range of $40,000-$50,000. We will consider both part-time and full-time candidates for this role.
