Physicians for Peace (PFP) trains providers of surgical care to strengthen healthcare systems in the world’s most fragile places.  For more than 30 years, in coordination with local partners and through our network of medical volunteers, PFP has delivered health education and medical training, coupled with compassion and commitment to address the need for training and education that builds surgical capacity.  We accomplish this by investing in long term partnerships centered on education, connecting medical expertise with defined needs, and responding and adapting to situational changes over time. 

Physicians for Peace is seeking a Development Director who will embrace a deep understanding of what we do to inspire people to invest in our mission and impact. The Development Director serves as a key spokesperson and advocate for Physicians for Peace in the funding community.

Working closely with the CEO, designated staff, the Board of Directors and volunteers, the Development Director will develop and implement PFP’s development strategy. Qualified candidates will have the demonstrated ability to develop a comprehensive development plan and work with diverse donor and funding streams including annual donors, major gifts, and both private and corporate foundations and a track record of success in attracting new funding.

In support of this development strategy, the Development Director will work with staff and leadership to create and implement a communications plan that both supports and enhances fundraising objectives.

Reporting to the CEO, the Development Director will lead fundraising for Physicians for Peace, as follows:

  • Raise at least $300,000 over the first twelve months from both current and new donors.
  • Create and implement a development plan to grow annual funds raised to $500,000 over the next 36 months. This plan will include aggressive outreach to current and prospective donors by the Development Director, the CEO, board members and designated staff.
  • Build a major gifts pipeline of current and new donors focused on soliciting gifts of $10,000 or more to enable growth and financial goal attainment.
  • Steward an existing portfolio of 75-100 individual donors, fostering relationships to help donors feel connected to PFP’s work and impact with a goal of ongoing support at similar or increased levels of giving.
  • Craft funding proposals in concert with Programs team to tailor messaging to donor interests.
  • Work collaboratively with the Programs team to research, select and write successful grant proposals.
  • Support CEO, staff, Board of Directors and volunteers to create a “culture of philanthropy” and provide support for their fundraising involvement on messaging, relationship management and follow-up. Train and support the board and staff as needed to achieve the donor outreach plan.

Qualifications

The candidate should be a mission-driven and results-driven fundraising professional with demonstrated ability to create and successfully execute a multi-year development plan to meet annual income targets.

Candidates will have 5-7 years of development experience in roles of progressive responsibility with a working knowledge of major gifts, foundation and corporate relations, annual giving/direct mail, prospect research, operations and stewardship.

Candidates should be

  • experienced in growing fundraising efforts for previous organizations, goal-oriented and self-motivated with a track record of soliciting and closing gifts between $5,000 and $50,000.  passionate about forming and nurturing mutually beneficial relationships with donors.
  • highly skilled in donor discovery and prospect relationship cultivation with demonstrated ability to strategically move individuals and institutions across the spectrum of prospect development.
  • proficient in planning and executing development projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes.
  • proven ability to manage contracted staff to meet deliverables in print and digital media, cultivation events and donor stewardship.
  • experienced working with digital and social strategies for engaging and cultivating the next generation of donors.
  • well-versed in building effective philanthropic networks and confident in their ability to guide and motivate team members, board members and other volunteer leaders in their roles in contributing to these philanthropic networks.

Attributes to be successful in this position include

  • Deep knowledge and understanding of the funding community and the ability to communicate Physicians for Peace’s mission and impact to a broad audience. 
  • Track record as an effective communicator; highly skilled in writing and speaking; adept at crafting letters of inquiry, proposals, donor correspondence, and collateral materials. 
  • Highly energetic, flexible and able to manage multiple priorities. 
  • Well-organized with exceptional attention to detail and follow through; a strong deadline orientation. 
  • Outgoing, straightforward and self-possessed; one who shares information readily, listens thoughtfully and respects the abilities and opinions of others. 
  • Experienced in prospect research and familiar with prospect research software. Proficient with Microsoft Office and donor management software. Ability to quickly learn and master new systems autonomously.
  • Able to work independently as well as working with others effectively in a remote work environment.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and highest ethical standards.

This position will work remotely from a home office in the United States, preferably within 3 hours flight time to the east coast, and be available for staff calls, meetings, donor events and committee calls, some of which may occur outside of traditional office hours.

Travel 12 - 18 times per year within the United States to hold regular face-to-face meetings and other interactions with donors and prospects. Willingness to travel occasionally outside the U.S. (Latin America, Africa).
